Default steering ecu, does it make much of a difference?

just wonder what are the difference between the stock steering and when you put an l-tuned steering ecu into your car. does it make that much of a difference?

Depends on the year. 2002 and 2003 GS430 models already have it - 2001 GS430 is open to debate. For sure the GS400s don't have it - I think .

Many people detect better feel at highway speeds - some have said that their low speed steering has lightened and the highspeed has firmed up.

My ECU is for sale (I have a 2003 GS430 and found out the hard way that it already had the ECU) - PM me if you are interested.

In my 98, it did.

You can also ask your dealer to tighten up the "pre-tensioner" , before the ECU install, and see how you like that. I have both, and my steering is heavy by comparison to the other GSs I've piloted.

Dex
Find out where that pretensioner adjustment is for me will ya? They won't do it any more - they claim it only applied to 98 and some 99 cars and that it was more of a part replacement. I'm dying to get my steering tightened.

Thanks,
Doug

I wish I could help you Doug. I have no idea where it is. I was attempting to reduce the 60mph->0 brake shimmy, and asked to try this too. Later, I found it was likely due to warped rotors, but they didn't even bat an eye when I asked about it, but mine is a 98, and I have a really good relationship with my Dealer / Service Dept (maybe because I should own stock in them I spend so much money there?).

To answer you guys question. the steering pretensioner is in the rack itself , I had it adjusted a while bax and I have to say that it does make the steering feel much better at both low and high speeds .now my next upgrade is the steering ecu and it should be even better .

a new ecu is about 130 bucks last time i checked?

the steering wheel pretensioner fix is only for certain 98 and 99 models, other gs will not get that fix coz' it would become an safety issue
