Are OEM Strut Mounts the only option I really have?
So I've been researching this like crazy, and it seems KYB strut mounts and bellows are complete Garbage. Everyone who has had them pretty much has said they have gotten a MAX of 2 years out of them. I've heard the same about Monroe. I know KYB makes quality struts so this pretty much blows since OEM Strut Mounts and bellows are going for serious $$$.
Anybody running Moog? Or another Brand for at least 2+ years without any issues. I really don't want to do this job twice because of cheap mounts, but Lexus wants double for the mounts and bellows then the actual struts will cost me:cry: Any help will be great:thumbup: |

Well my current car has OEM, but my other car had KYB's and it felt fine. I just recommended Grabriel as they are another option, and more costly but not too by much. Where did you find horrible KYB reviews? Are you running lowering springs?

99Custom, you could also buy a new/used OEM Supra TT shocks and springs and install those. Much more compliant sporty ride which won't break the bank and will still have decent comfort.
Buy suspension parts from a Toyota dealer (for a 93.5-98 Supra), not a Lexus dealer unless you find a good deal used in the classifieds. |

Moog is typically a good quality product. I have had no troubles with KYB mounts on OEM springs and KYB struts. I had them on my old 92 SC400 for the three years I knew and owned the car ( a buddy owned before me ).

The MKIV TT suspension will fit any 92-2000 SC300 or 400. If you do a forum search for how the OEM TT suspension looks you'll see many pictures. I understand you won't want to make it too aggressive since it is her car. Do a bit of reading on people's impressions first if you're concerned. What it should do is exchange a bit of softness and especially body roll for more control.

Another option that does cost quite a bit more than most "OEM replacements" are the Bilstein AK1242 (front) and AK1243 (rear) shocks made for the MKIV Supra. They became popular to use because of the custom Gixxer_Drew DIY coil over suspension but they were originally designed by Bilstein to be used with MKIV Supra TT OEM springs. Those shocks were once licensed by Toyota as a TRD aftermarket set.
Shock absorber (and road tire) technology has improved quite a bit since the early and middle 90's. |
I just changed the drivers rear strut mount this weekend myself (took about an hour). It eliminated the noise I was having. I used a factory mount I got off ebay for cheap:)
I was going to do the entire suspension, but my wife keeps talking about switching cars now so I'm not investing money into something that the car doesn't really need. Thanks for all the help in the thread, if I end up keeping the car i will eventually do the MK4 suspension as it seems like a great option for a good price IMO. |
