Default Brake lines: only front or front and rear?

I am using the standard Lexus brakes and am looking to improve the "Feel" of my brakes.

Some vendors sell front and rear brake lines separately.
Is it necessary or recommendable to replace the rear brake lines as well?
Since 80% of the braking is done by the fronts, I expect that replacing them will give a huge improvement in the brake pad feel. But would it be worth to pay another $80 - 100 for the rears?

You can get Goodridge stainless front and rear for about $120.

Check tirerack.com.

R

And they are DOT approved.

Before I put on my Suptra TT brakes and new rotors, I upgraded just the lines with a stainless steel set from Steve G. Did all four.

The improvement is a noticable increase in firmness, but it isn't anywhere near 'huge'. Terry has a good suggestion flushing and switching to the Motul fluid at the same time as well - good stuff.

There have been a number of good threads on SS lines in the past... here are a couple:

I agree that around 80% of the braking is done by the fronts, but what you are trying to do with braided lines is improve the overall brake feel and remove the sponginess felt in the pedal. If you only do the front lines, then you are only improving the brake feel by around 50%, since you have only eliminated roughly half of the rubber lines. These rubber lines expand slightly when braking "hard", which is where the sponginess is coming from. I say this assuming you have no air bubbles in your lines.

While your at it, I'd completely flush the current brake fluid out (to get rid of air bubbles) and replace it with Motul 600. The Motul is not recommended to be mixed with other types of fluids, which is why you also need to flush out all the old fluid.

you definitely want to upgrade to ss lines at all 4 corners at the same time. yes 80% braking is done in the front, but you want the pressure you put on the brakes to be distributed at all 4 corners. if you don't have ss lines in the rear, when i hard brake, since the rear is still rubber, it will tend to expand, take away your pressure from pedal, and the front will effectively get less pressure. definiely get ss lines for all brakes, front and back.

for around 100 bucks US you get 4 goodridge lines for gs already, so that's not bad at all. and get the mutol 600 fluid and you will be very happy about it
