Seized Rear Caliper
Seems to be a common problem. I tired to replace my rear brake pads and rotor due to the brake pedal feeling a little soft. I was going to make sure the caliper pins were lubed like other members have mentioned on other threads, only to find out my rear calipers are totally seized. I figured a little rust but never would have imagined this. The bottom pin is rusted on so tight. I know I totally annoyed my neighbors from all the banging of the hammer. Got a quote from my regular mechanic...he is an Acura Master Tech and instantly knew of my seized issue when I told him my calipers may need to be changed.
So he quoted me $359 for new calipers and labor. Does this sound like a reasonable deal? I would change them myself but have never changed a caliper before and I would feel better letting a pro do this one. |
I purchased rear driver for my 06 is350 from rock auto. 80 bucks and 60 for core.

That price isn't bad at all for the parts AND installation. Just make sure the reman calipers are quality units.

I had my rear calipers replaced under my Lexus extended warranty. I believe they charged more than $800 if it wasn't under warranty.
That is a good deal from your mechanic if it includes labor. |
By the way, for future reference, is your mechanic anywhere near Chicago?
Thanks |
Had mine replaced under ext. warranty too @ 90K KM.
Would have been around $800-900 out of warranty. |

Same thing happened to me,need it to replace my brake pads and find out that the caliper was seized...took it to my mechanic n he used a power hammer to finally get the part off...total cost of labor..$80 + the cost of the brake pads that i got from sewell...:p..you don't need to buy a new caliper..

How can Lexus charge $800-900? A quality replacement part can be had under $100 after you return the core and changing the caliper out and bleeding the brakes can't take longer than 2 hours. Never changed my calipers out but from doing my brakes seems like a very easy job.

just replaced mine . rear was seized , used a hammer, got it off, cleaned/serviced the calipers, greased it with industrial grease, replaced the brake pads, you really don't have to buy new calipers.
|
^SOME folks might get away it not replacing them; but like in my case, I had to replace one for sure. And since I'm so OCD about my cars, I had to get the matching set. One was seized 100% solid (tried a torch and beating on it with no luck) and the other was say 75% seized.
|
Yeah...I really hammered this caliper for over 2.5 hrs. I finally gave up on it. To be honest with you, I think you are right though...I can probably bring it to the mechanic and let him have a go at it. But for a little bit more, I decided to just get new ones instead of using a beaten up one that is already pretty much used up.

I had my calipers replaced over the weekend and what a huge difference. I knew the brakes were soft but honestly, just thought it was how Lexus brakes felt. Didn't realize the calipers were seized until I tried to DIY my rear brakes. But big difference. I also found out I have a small rear dif leak. Bringing it back on Saturday to have the leak taken care of.

^Nice change eh? I thought the exact same too; but after the swap it was like a whole new car! :)
Hope that diff leak ain't nothing major! |
