2012 IS250 - Rattling noise from strut?
Has anyone else experienced a problem where a very noticeable rattle occurs on the driver's side when driving over bumps and divots. The vehicle is a stock 2012 IS250 with only 29k miles but beyond the new car warranty period.
The mechanic advises replacing the strut+mount and then reinspecting to see if the noise stops. No issues were found with the bushings, ball joints, springs or sway bar. The strut is not leaking.
In the area where I drive, I regularly see potholes that are at least 1"-2" deep on the US-101. I think the city and state have stopped proactively resurfacing streets and highways since before 2008 so there are plenty of 2-"3" deep potholes everywhere.
Seems like an expensive repair with no guaranteed outcome, thus my question to the crowd so see if
a) others are finding the struts need to be replaced at low mileage
b) there other common issues to check for
c) the road conditions in my area are complete crap and I should expect this type of repair

Mufflers are banging on the car when rolling on bumps? Common issues with IS 
Shake them, you will probably notice they are very loose. Try to put tie-wraps on your hangers (or change for stiffer ones).
Hope you found your issue, otherwise it will be a lot more expensive...

A shock doesn't need to leak to be "bad". I recently experienced this on my own ride.

I took it to the dealer at Serramonte to have it fixed. I only replaced 1 strut and haven't had any problems -- and it is now 5.5 years later. At the time I also got a quote from a few other shops but most were only interested in replacing both struts ... I don't know if it was only the mounts. Oh well, maybe Caltrans will repave the whole section of 101 in the region after the toll lane project finishes. Good luck!
