Squealing sound when braking slowly
I am pretty much car illiterate so I would greatly appreciate it if someone can diagnose my car problem.
When I use my brakes at very slow speeds (<15mph), I often hear a loud squealing sound (like nails on a chalkboard). The sound is not heard when braking at high speed. Its usually heard when backing out of my drive way or slowing down at a stop sign/light.
Does this mean that my brake pads needs replacing or rotors? or both?
Thanks for your help!

Get them inspected. I don't think it might just need full replacing because I have the same thing but I checked with the dealership, 2 to be exact, and they said there are about 60% of pad left on all wheels! They said it's normal, the squeaking sound and brake dust =T I gave up after trying to go through corporate as well.

well i had the incident too!!
but its now fixed
for some odd reason, OEM rotor makes squeaky sound alot but once i changed to some aftermarket rotor, it stopped! its just the OEM rotor thats having a problem. Maybe trying changing the rotor~

I hear that the vibration in the shims cause that high pitched noise. Maybe a new set will fix the problem. Back when I had the problem, I had to take out the brakes, clean and spray the shims with anti squeal spray and after the noise was gone.
Also it could mean your brake pads are worn, as they have a built in piece that makes the squealing noise when the pad level is close to 5mm(?). I think 5mm is the point where you should start looking to replace the pads. Double check with another member to make sure that its 5mm though.

I got that sound 1 month after I took delivery of my brand new IS250. Dealer took the pads out and rub the rotors and pads with sandpaper. After that, the noise lessened instantly but still remained. I just ignored it and continued driving the car for another 4-5 months and noise just gone by itself. I think the possible causes are:
1. Unbeded-in pad-rotor contact surfaces
2. Soiled pads
3. Improper lubrication on the caliper slider pins.
I would try the cheaper way of sanding, cleaning the pads and rotor first. If still persists then try resurfacing the rotors. Changing the pads and rotors would be the last option.

I had the same exact problem with 43880 miles. In my case, it was the front pad wear pin contacting the rotors. I just replaced front Rotors (Drilled) with new pads a couple of days ago and problem is fixed. Try replacing your pads and have your rotors turned. At least use emrey cloth on your rotors surface in a circular motion.
Good luck.
Good luck.

why replacing your pads if you can complain it with your dealer if your car is still under warranty-been through twice after purchasing a 2006 IS350 with 32t miles and after a couple of months i experience the same problem with the thread opener that i complain why i'm hearing a squeking sound when braking and noticed brake dust develop on both front rims thinking that the previous owner might put an ordinary brake pad-they check and found out that involves a TSIB so they replaced it(rotors and brake pads plus assembly i,e, shims)-my suggestion is if your car is still under warranty always refer to dealer everytime you encounter any problem with your car-thats the purpose of warranty to save our butts from paying or spending to much on those king of repairs-good luck
