Default need help with vibration

hi,
I just bought a wheel from other lexus owner and I had it mounted from discount tire. They told me to come back tomorrow for re-torqueing of the tire but I noticed the vibration at high speeds today. I asked them to balance the tire before mounting so I don't know what might be causing the vibration. my car's ride was fine before switching tire because I just had alignment and balance checked with dealer 2weeks ago. I think its the tire but do you guys think that re-torqueing will fix it? should I ask for re balancing of tire? I use to have stock 16s and new tire and wheels are 245-40-18's. Any input is appreciated. thanks

possible causes:

1. the wheel you bought is "not true round", or the wheel has a bent in it.

2. the tyre is defective( less likely than the first)

i will let other experts address the re-torqueing issue as i am not familiar with it..

D,

i think he was referring to his new 18s, not stock...and yes, if you hit a nasty pothole, you can damage the stock wheels

GS4Will,

When you say the wheel has a bent in it does that mean a bent on the lip of the wheel or on the inside(where you CANT see it)...........Can a bent wheel not be visable from looking at it

The reason I ask is because sometimes I get the same thing that kapdori gets, only difference is that it doesnt happen all the time....I could be going 80Mph and it runs smooth and other times it vibrates like crazy

I cheacked all my wheels and I dont see any dents/bends . Is there a way to test to see if my wheel is bent

Thanks

CAM..

keep in mind that the GS steering is quite sensative, thast is why we had quite a few discussion on this topic...there are new GS that came from the factory needed adjusment immediately.

from what kap described, in his case, i would say 90% is due to bent wheel as it was not there before....or, it could be the fact it was not a bent wheel but the whee/tyre need to be-rebalanced

and the wheel could be "bent" at places that is not visible. the best thing to do is to take the whels to a shop with good machinces, preferably hunter brand.

for you the best thing is to have them checked out by a good tyre shop. personally i do not think you got bent wheels.

Most high performance tires track the road grooves a bit therefore the steering wheel vibrates when that happens

Could it be that you threw a couple of wheel weights?

Let them re-check the balance.

There are specialty shops that can successfully straighten out a bent wheel.

Thumbs down Common Problem

This is a common problem with GS's. You can look at many of the posts and find that there are steering and vibration issues when switching to larger than 16 inch wheels. I have a '98 with factory 17s and the front end noise is terrible. I was able to stop the vibration through careful balance and alignment. Also, tires are very important. I had a set of Falkens for a couple of weeks that were awful, I now have Yokos AVS dB. Will try Michelin Pilots next time around.

Good luck.

Vince
