man that sucks, i was always afraid of this with my GS's..
I've noticed all the GS's that have posted this happen have all been 98-00 I thought i read somewhere that the 01+ newer replacement balljoints are much safer..
Has there ever been a posted incident of this happening to a 01+? just curious i searched awhile back and came up with nothing (not saying it couldn't)

I wasn't so lucky. Mine just separated at the bottom of the pass when I was going 50mph. Somehow I was able to steer to the shoulder easy. I think the wet road helped. It felt like the tire blew, imagine my surprise when I saw it. Thank god this didn't happen a mile earlier. I could have gone off a cliff.
Mine was making noise then stopped about a week before it happened.
134,000 on the odo. Just bought the car a little over a month ago. (98 GS400)

I am going to replace the driver side soon. Is there anything else I should check out or change while I'm down there? Tie rods, control arm bushings, upper ball joints? The uppers seem tight, but if they are problematic might as well do them too.

im very nervous. i changed mine 3000 miles ago but the noise is back. I know my caster bushings are worn and i am about to replace those. I hope its the bushings making the noise

Still have not done the GS application but will in 2011. I use a high end MOOG ball joint that is serviceable and easy to replace. It also has a nice forged ball stud and should stand up to lots of abuse.
