Is Supra steering rack shorter ratio? Swappable?

I'm spoiled by my competition package BMW sedan and it's really tight steering. 45 degree turn of the steering wheel will get me around a 90 degree turn.

I'm curious if the Supra rack is shorter and if it's swappable. Sometimes in my SC I feel like I'm driving a schoolbus.

Thanks

i have the rack out of my mkiv but im not about to take apart the SC too just to take measurements. id be happy to take some measurements of my supra rack if someone has a SC rack laying around that they can measure, that way we can compare

both steering racks are the same. not sure on the ratio.

im sure if you do some searching online or both vehicle reviews including "technical information" it will list it.

you could just replace your old worn out steering rack bushings if you haven't already, replace the upper and lower control arms with ones from a supra (the rubber bushings are alot harder than the ones on the SC) and lastly replace the sway bars with ones atleast from a TT supra or get some aftermarket ones. that will help the crappy steering alot, but to top it off get some nice coilovers too if you don't already have some

^^ I already have all of those :)

It's the lock-to-lock that I think sucks (compartively). I understand that it's a luxury car, thought there is always room for improvement.

I found this!

Steering ratio: 17.5:1 on Supra and Supra Turbo.
Turns, lock to lock: 3 on Supra and Supra Turbo.

from mkiv.com. Still searching from the SC300 ratio, but I suppose I could just go out to the car and measure the lock to lock. It's cold and late though, I'll do it tomorrow.

I saw that... stupid editor didn't catch the 3:1 can't possibly be the steering RATIO.. maybe lock-to-lock. I'll find out in a few minutes before I drive to work ;)

Checked the lock to lock, and my SC300 is 3:1. I guess that means the racks are the same :(

if you want quicker steering get the following:

Stance super angle kit: http://stance-usa.com/sus/products/c...uper-angle-kit

also look into Powered by Max inner tie rod spacers

or get Alex Pfeiffer to mod your stock spindles(not good for road racing. gives you a funny feeling at speed)

boostd4 03-08-10 07:03 PM

I'm not sure that changes how "quick" the steering is... it looks like it just increases how far you can turn the wheel. At least the description says it adds up to 10% more angle.

Yea, you could make sharper turn-arounds, but you increase the lock-to-lock.

The goal would be to REDUCE lock-to-lock so less steering input gives MORE steering angle. What am I missing?

5sp_jzz30 03-08-10 08:43 PM

you will have more angle for the same amount of the steering wheel turning thus you will need to turn the steering wheel less to turn the wheels the same amount.

Please explain to me how this is accomplished by changing the tie rod ends.

You ever notice that the Supra steering wheel is smaller diameter than the sc300?

Supra steering wheel is 14 1/4" compared the 15 1/4" for the Sc300 so that will make t feel different as well.

Smaller steering wheel will help. Btw the sc was not made to make sharp turns like a bmw . Its more of a highway cruiser.

there is a company that sells spindles that have the mount for the tie rod closer to the center of the spindle. those will give you what your looking for. ill see if i can find it again
