Q: about coilovers vs. stock setup
I was wondering if anyone ever weighed the stock suspension setup (shocks and springs total) vs. their coilover setup.?
If so, which was lighter? I'm guessing the coilovers, right?
And if so, was it a significant difference in weight or do the two weigh about the same?
I'm doing a bit of research on weight reduction. And let's just say: lose 100lbs = about -.5seconds 0-60.
Thanks in advance. That is all.

Never weighted my stock setup but I'll take it with me to weigh when I get my Tein FLEX installed (soon...working with a 2-day a week mechanic isn't easy!)
First off, if you want to shave weight, take out your spare tire. It's a full size spare...taking out the seats works too...and change the drivers seat to a Bride/Sparco Carbon Fiber seat. That should be over 100 pounds in savings...
You could also rip out all the insulation in the car also...that should be a lot of weight right there...you could also go on a diet and loose some weight too...

Ha!! Me on a diet!
Hey manaray,
Thanks man for getting them weighed. I'm sure others can benefit from this info. I don't think I need to go on a diet, I'm pretty skinny as it is already.
As for the car itself, I'm looking to put it on a diet, but the trick is that I don't want to gut the interior. Sounds difficult keeping the interior stock, but I already have a couple of things planned out to lose the ~200lbs I'm shooting for, just not too sure if they're legal or not (like Flexane windows on a streetcar). The only things I plan on replacing in the interior are the two power seats (these are pretty heavy right? I'm guessing 70lbs each?) upfront with some "adjustable" recaro buckets (probably 20lbs each or less?) to keep me in place whenever I do some hard cornering.
The rest of the weight savings will come from replacing the exterior/engine stuff and gutting the trunk. My plan is to make the GS fast, but still comfortable to be in. I hope this makes sense. If you've seen those Option2 Magazine Cover cars that are tuned up to the max and still roll with complete interiors you'll understand what I'm aiming for.

My Tein CS coilovers weigh at least 5 pounds lighter than the stock shocks and springs. It would seem to me that the stock shock is constructed of steel and the Tein coilover of some lightweight material such as aluminum.
