Default Need Help disconnecting Upper A from Spindle/Steering Knuckle

Hey guys...

I am having a hell of a time trying to get the upper a arm/control arm to separate from the spindle/steering knuckle!! I am using a pittman arm puller to try to get it off... but the arm puller keeps expanding and slipping off the edge of the spindle. I soaked it with liquid wrench/WD-40 to try to have it loosen up....

I am wondering if you all have any tips or tricks to maybe get this off... I had a mechanic tell me to use an air hammer on the the side of the spindle... but I don't have access to air tools at this moment.

Put the nut back on the stud that connects the two parts so that the screw end of the stud is flush with the nut and take a baby sledge hammer to it. Or try a smaller pittman arm puller...

soak it with some PB blaster for a couple of minutes. Then locate the two tabs on the spindle and use two hammer and hammer it. Make sure that you time you swing so that the two hammer head hits the side of the spindle at the same time. Since the bolt on the upper A arms are wedge shape, the impact from the two combining strike will expand the metal a little which will allow the wedging action to push the bolt out.

I tried using a pitman puller and that did not work... kept slipping off... The puller was actually flexing... it is an OEM brand puller. I also tried heating it with a heat gun and then when that didn't work a I tried an acetylene torch... that started to melt the rubber so I stopped... Then I got pissed off and tried an lower ball joint fork and tore up the ball joint... Still didn't come off!!!!

So I went and bought an used control arm for a hundred bucks and I am going to put that on.

I am not a happy camper

You should try to bang the side with a sledge hammer...just don't hit the thread.
