Default DIY brake caliper paint write-up (with pics)

Sup guys,

last weekend my good friend Ian and I painted my brake calipers. I got the Dupli-Color brush-on caliper paint kit, but in the end I didn't use the actual paint. I went with high-temp spray paint for better coverage. Since I needed to mask everything for the clear-coat anyways, the brush-paint doesn't seem all that practical.

I got some white LEXUS stickers from someone on ClubLexus before, and finally got the chance to use them.

Anyways, here are some of the pics. I started taking pics half way into the process, so missed the earlier parts of the DIY job.

Here's my friend Ian putting on the LEXUS sticker on the front.

Rear. As you can see, the paint is matte black. I needed clear to go over the stickers, so didn't want TOO MUCH shine.

My car jacked up on 4 jack stands.

Rear shot.

Here are some finished shots. My car was not washed so no dirty car comments

I haven't taken any pics after smoked headlights, so I'll probably do a better photoshoot in a few weeks.

Nice job!!! This is going to be my next mod. The rear brakes are beginning to give me that early warning sqeaking, so while there apart it's time to dress them up.

Job well done. The stickers makes it even better. I see you used some cardboard in your project. Is it fairly easy to do in terms of getting the right parts properly covered? Any tight spots to be worried about when doing this?

The smaller/narrower parts of the calipers I had covered with masking tape paper, and the cardboards are used to cover the bigger areas, such as the rotors and the suspension behind the brakes.

There are 3 holes on the side of the front calipers, if you paint into them they will mark 3 spots on the rotor's edge. You might want to get those covered/stuffed with something. Other than that the masking job is straight-forward.

looks good, so i guess any high temp paint will work??? if thats the case then why do they sell the "caliper" specific paint??? i wonder whats the real difference

It's just a high-temperature clear enamel from PepBoys.

I would think that any high-temp paint will work. The key is being able to withstand high temperature that the brake generates. The paint that I used can withstand 1600 F I think.

I think that caliper specific paint is just regular high-temp enamel, except that they come in brighter colors such as red, yellow, and etc. Usually high-temp paint is just black or gray.

The kit I got was interesting because it is actually a paint-on kit, not a spray-on. This eliminates the need for masking. But I had stickers that needed clear coat anyways so I didn't go with the brush. The kit also comse with brake cleaners, so that's good.

Nice write-up, I painted mine a couple weeks ago and haven't done my write-up yet.

Love your car's look!
