Trunk strut and lowering springs
I have two questions here. Does anyone know where to find a good price on the trunk struts? It's becoming annoying to have to hold the trunk lid open anytime I need to use it. I went to the Lexus parts department and they were almost $250!
As for the lowering springs, has there been any preference on Eibach Pro-Kits vs Tanabe NF210? Ive used pro-kits with Tokico blues and I was overall fairly satisfied, althoug ride quality wasnt the greatest. Ive never had any experience with Tanabe though. I want to lower the car, moderately, and would like to avoid having to do camber adjustment mods. Really, I just need to replace the shocks/struts, but I figured while Im at it I might as well do the springs too. The car is really just my DD but the stock suspension feels way too soft compared to what Im used to. |
for the trunk struts go to rockauto.com, for a pair it'll be just under $40.:)

Select Lexus >> 1992 >> SC400 >> Body-exterior >> Lift Support.
It says you need to buy 2 of them, but believe me just buying one replacing one at a time will hold the trunk up as well, and it won't wear out any quicker than if you replaced both of them. I've experimented both ways, the wear and eventual failure is comparable whether you replace one at a time or both, replacing one at a time will at least save you $20. I'm using the SACHS ones rather than the Adelco. If you need help changing them: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-1st-gen-1992-2000/54182-how-to-trunk-lift-support-w-pics.html It's a great write-up, complete with pics and instructions. |
You really think only replacing one is sufficient? Im thinking since the shipping is only going to be 40 cents cheaper, the difference in price in the end of buying 1 vs 2 is only going to be like $14 (splitting shipping costs). How long do these struts last? Is there any difference between the spoiler ones and non-spoiler ones? The guy at Lexus told me they would both work and that the ones made for the trunk with spoiler may last a little longer.

And for me, I replaced ONE after both ended up being shot about a year ago, and it still holds strong today and I don't have problems with the trunk at all. When I replaced BOTH at the same time 2 and a half years ago with Lexus oem struts, they failed totally within a year and a half, at that point I went with the aftermarket and changed only one, and its still holding a year later. |
i have replaced just one and it works just fine
