Default What's up with my Brakes...

Or is it all in my head?
I recently joined the family coming from a problematic VW Passat. I noticed that I have to apply a decent amount of pressure on my brake pedal to come to a complete stop. I figure it was my break pads, but they seem to be in decent shape as well as the rotors. I thought it might be getting used to a heavier car, but my wife's mini-van doesn't do this...

I also checked the brake fluid level, and that also looks fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks Guys! I love this site!

its time to upgrade to a BIG BRAKE KIT.

But if you're on a budget like i am, i just purchased goodridge stainless steel braided brake lines along with OEM slotted brembo rotors and decent semi-metallic brake pads from PBR/AXXIS. Throw in some DOT4 Motul brake fluid and i think your brake feel will be much better than it is now. If you're not in a rush and have time to look around (especially in the classifieds here on CL), you'll find some great deals. I put my package together (front and rear) for under $400 w/ labor cost to install.

gs3.0 nailed it with his reply . The OEM GS pedal feel is awful and nonlinear... BUT they will stop your car like nobody's business if you hit them hard.

Do you think I will feel a difference if I bleed the brakes?

I believe you should bleed your brakes atleast once a year. I usually bleed mine after the winter season, during the first few weeks of spring.

I just bought my car and noticed the mushy feel of the brakes...so I guess this would help?

Assuming the previous owner didn't change it frequently, i'd say yes, it would definitely help. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and this contributes to a loss in brake feel. I forgot to mention that if you're using Motul brake fluid (usually for track applications), you might have to change more frequently and i don't recommend using it unless you do some heavy braking. Apparently, they absorb more moisture than regular OEM brake fluid. Depending on your driving style, OEM brake fluid from Toyota/Lexus should be sufficient.

Yup, I've tried this once or twice by necessity.
