Default Tires: 245/45/19 vs. 255/45/19

I know this has been discussed a few times on the forum, but will I be able to see or feel a discernible difference if move from 245/45/19 to 255/45/19?

I believe the 255s will fit on the 8" rim, but they are more expensive too.

Let me know your thoughts.

Your actual speed at an indicated 65mph will be 65.83mph with the wider tires, but that's about it.

Use the calculators here to see the effects of the wider tire - https://tiresize.com/comparison/

What kind of difference are you looking for?

Assuming otherwise identical material and tread pattern, wider tires would have better grip, but they would also have higher rolling resistance (higher fuel consumption), higher weight (slower acceleration and deceleration), increased risk of aquaplaning, and they would be more prone to tramlining as well. Assuming same profile, which is of course relative, they would be slightly taller which might improve ride comfort, but the increased perimeter would also change the distance travelled per one rotation, which again would affect speedometer readings. There's also the risk that a taller, wider tire will rub the wheel wells or components, when at extremes of either steering or suspension travel.

However, since the difference in width would be so small in this case, everything listed above is probably negligible.

Hi

As far as ride, I can’t say there has been a difference, but changing to Pirelli Centurato 7 plus has made a difference. I got the 255 because I like the stance. It makes the car, in my opinion, more muscular looking.

I think it is is strictly a matter of personal preference.

Good of luck in your search.

I'd love to see a picture of the wider tires on the car...

Drivers side

Side view

Passenger side

As you can see, there really isn’t much for width, but it seems to fill out the depth of the wheel well just enough to have that muscular look.

How about one 3/4 down the side from the rear of the car?

Here are views from rear and front 3/4 and then a full on wheel well on front. Hope these help.

Cheers.

Well, I thought it did also in person, not sure you can get the full look in a picture, but I hope this helps anyone thinking of doing the 255s.

The Pirelli tires are by far the most comfortable and quiet. There will be road noise on cement that is grooved or rougher blacktop but they are still much better than the hankook that were on before. I don’t have 3k on them since I purchased them last year but I concur they are pretty quiet and on freeways, they are very nice.

Thanks to all on on this forum who made comments and suggestions for the tires. It really made my choice easier.

Best.

Yeah they really are nice tires for this car. There are a few new options out now I’m tempted to try, the Bridgestone Quiettrack and the Michelin Primacy Tour but the P7s are so good it’s hard to roll the dice on something else.

The 255 sidewall may be 1/4" higher which could theoretically improve ride but the unsprung weight will increase, negating this potential benefitt.

I will share this tidbit: bc the tires a fraction wider, it has helped me when it come to parking if I get close to a curb. There seems to be enough of a “pooch” out from the wheel, it has saved my chrome wheels several times.
