DEPENDS.......The FINAL map update for LEXUS Navigation GEN 4 systems was 2015. If you have the original GEN 2/3 system that came in the 02 SC430s the FINAL map update may even be older. Probably 2013 or 14 and remember you need the one for North America. European ones were made for more years.

What is the last year for an 05 SC? Is that a Gen 2/3 or a Gen4?

SC430 year models 2005-2009 were GEN 4 systems. So the FINAL DVD map update for North America was 2015.

To be clear, 2002-2004 SC430s came with a Generation 2/3 navigation system. The GEN 4 system was/is a simple direct plug and play swap of the DVD player.

Clarify please. If a person has a GEN 3 Nav system and would like to upgrade to the latest maps, i.e. 2013 as stated in an earlier post, does one just purchase a new DVD and then insert it into their Nav unit in the trunk of the car, or is something else needed in order to have everything work correctly. I don't use my Nav all that much, but it does get old when my screen is on and the Nav screen shows me driving home into an area with no roads.

To answer your question simply: Yes.

Complex answer follows:

There are two possible ways to upgrade your car’s navigation system:

1. MAP software ONLY: Purchase a “new” produced by Lexus DVD for the correct DVD player (Original equipment) in the car.

2. DVD Player & MAP Upgrade: Install a “new” GEN 4 hardware to the car upgrading the DVD player AND purchased a “new” 2015 DVD Final edition, produced by Lexus, MAP software.

2002-2004 SC430 cars came with a GENERATION 2/3 DVD player mounted in the trunk. Final “new” DVD software map: 2013

2005-2009 SC430 came with a GENERATION 4 DVD player mounted in the trunk. Final “new” DVD software map: 2015

Why update when the latest map is 2013 or 2015? Use your phone map. Always up-to-date plus live traffic. I only use my NAV screen for compass.

NAV is telling you the area is getting too developed since 2013. It is time to move.

You're absolutely right. I hardly drive my SC anywhere that I am not familiar with anyway, but unfortunately my phone NAV is also somewhat dated since I'm using an iPhone 4 or something like that. My wife has a few apps such as Waze which we use frequently when out of town but the app won't work on my phone.

If its not too expensive and as simple as locating a 2013 update on ebay that would still be something I do just encase I find myself lost and needed some quick local guidance.

When you do update the map, remember you will probably need to select the correct “area” of North America. Lexus divided the USA & Canada into 11 zones or search areas. Chances are the default search area may not be where you are.

I purchased the latest nav CD for my 06. I feel stupidly helpless because I haven’t yet figured out how to eject the old CD. Shouldn’t it be as simple as pressing the button on the left of the DVD player in the trunk? I’ve tried it a variety of ways (key on/off, Nav screen on/off, pressing and holding the button in those situations, etc.). Would someone please provide the key bit of knowledge that I obviously lack?

thanks

Start the car
open the trunk
locate DVD navigation GPS system plastic plate, and remove.
Find the button that says “Push”
if it’s positioned to the right side, slide it to the left or open position
if it’s in the open position (LEFT SIDE) push it

DVD drawer should open.
