Default LC500 convertible - hard top or soft top?

Hi all

Just a quick question, has there been any official announcement on what the roof will be for the LC500 convertible?

Please tell me it is a hard top.....I think it suits the Japanese way of things. I have done a lot of research and I found that some articles say it will be hard top, while others say soft top, making me so confused.....

What do you guys think? Any forum member here with access to an insider?

The soft top version was chosen from the start by the development team.

The owner of my dealership said he thinks it will be a soft top. That’s all we know at the moment. He went to a corporate event on it last year and they mentioned there was an LC convertible but didn’t go into much detail about it.

It was chosen from the start, but does this mean it will 100% be a soft top?

I'd bet it will be a soft top to help keep the weight down...

Yes. Weight savings combined with very limited boot (trunk) space dictated that choice from the start.

Thank you for your post. May I ask if you have access to an insider? Because I read an article that claims to have insider info. That article says hard top...

My info comes from a top management acquaintance at Toyota/Lexus Canada.

Lexus has never made a soft top convertible.

True, this is what I thought too. Its just the Japanese way of things. In this case I was sure they would go hard top. For example, the overall looks of Lexus is something many people are not a fan of....(not me, i personally LOVE lexus styling). I think the design of Lexus has a lot of Japanese styling elements. Similarly, this also comes into effect in designing the roof.

Well hopefully before long we can finally find out.....

Please dont spread information that is not official/confirmed yet. That is a well known render from someone. A render of a soft top LC500. It is by no means final/confirmed.

LOL the LC convertble itself isn't officially CONFIRMED by LEXUS that it is definitely going into production either, although from "insider info"/ people who have talked to Lexus officials, it is highly likely. Like the softtop, we will just have to wait and see.
I think the softtop photos look very good btw.

Lexus has never made a soft top convertible.
Yes, that’s technically true, but Toyota has produced several so called soft tops over the years, thus plenty of production and engineering experience in house.

Personally, when it finally comes to market, I hope it’s a convertible hard top. It just seems more correct for a $100k car. But I suppose that’s my bias.

I’ve dealt with the absence of trunk space for years with my SC430 and it’s really not an issue. You adapt. I’ve been patiently waiting for Lexus to come up with a new convertible since the SC ended production in 2010. The IS350c just wasn’t what I wanted and its production ended in 2015.

So I, and I suspect many other convertible owners, will be disappointed if a LC500 with a soft top is the solution to the missing Sport Convertible segment.

Over on Lexus Enthusiast, there are some quotes pointing to a soft top.

Lexus LC chief engineer Koji Sato explained the LCC was designed as a soft-top convertible

Sato said the design hinges on a soft top roof that folds into the available space.

It'll be interesting to see if that's what makes it to production.
