Watch the BMW X1 clobber test dummies in IIHS pedestrian safety test
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has completed its first round of new testing for automatic emergency braking systems meant to mitigate or prevent collisions with pedestrians. Of 11 small SUVs evaluated, IIHS gave "Superior" ratings to four: the 2018-19 Honda CR-V, 2019 Subaru Forester, 2019 Toyota RAV4 and the 2019 Volvo XC40.
Five more earned an "Advanced" rating: the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, 2018-19 Hyundai Kona, 2019 Kia Sportage, 2018-19 Mazda CX-5 and 2019 Nissan Rogue. IIHS rated the 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander as "Basic," while the 2018-19 BMW X1 received no credit.

- X1 with pedestrian system did not brake at all
- New Rav4 and Subaru had best system, not hitting pedestrians once.

It appears that BMW's safety philosophy has been that the driver remains in full control of the vehicle and it is their responsibility to respond to visual or vibration or audio (or any combination thereof). Every time you start up a BMW, you have to acknowledge you're responsible for your own driving. It is not incumbent on the safety systems of the BMW to save you from your own stupidity or ignorance or road neglect. So either you are looking smart in a BMW, or can play dumb and irresponsible in a top scoring vehicle praised by the IIHS.

This was a good laugh.
Truth be told BMW is doing false advertising here, they do have pedestrian detection just not on X1. What X1 has is chopped off safety system that does have pedestrian detection on some higher up models but for some reason BMW keeps saying its pedestrian warning blah blah package on X1 which is not true. Careful play of words makes you think that X1 will brake because of pedestrian while it will only break in case there is a car in front.

Just that BMW is so behind this and they have always been, you can get better system in base Corolla, it has nothing to do with vehicle itself, TMC puts same system in everything above Yaris. If you look back last 3-4 years since they started automated braking tests, BMW (and VW group) have always been around dead last.

JNCAP is getting serious about testing automated braking system, they add new tests every year.
This is new for 2019 night-time pedestrian test with addition of glare from headlines of another vehicle:
new TSS 2.0 works well here
