I've been doing a lot of research on the next car to buy and i'm heavily favoring the RX350... however one of my preferences is a decent towing capacity. Well I noticed that 2010-2012 have a 2000 lb towing capacity and then in 2013 -2015 have a 2015 towing capacity. I was wondering if this was true and if so why? Did lexus downgrade the axles? Or was the previous 2000 lb rating not safe?

The limit on all the model years you mentioned is 3,500 pounds on vehicles with the optional towing prep package. Oddly, this is sometimes omitted in the sales brochures but it is stated in most of the brochures for the gen 3 RX which you can view at http://www.auto-brochures.com/lexus.html

2,000 pounds might be the limit on gen 3 RX without the optional tow prep package.

I wouldn't tow much of anything with the RX setup. Maybe a couple of bicycles?

For towing......use the GX OR LX. Or a pickup truck.

I just don't want to risk burning up the transmission or anything else.

^^ What he said. The RX is not and never will be much of a tow rig. That's what trucks are for.

I'm not so sure, I watched my brother-in-law drive a nail in a wall with an adjustable wrench.
The picture he hung covered up the dents from the swings and misses.

^^ I hope you hid that guy's tool box in a spot where he can never find it. And never let him anywhere near your vehicles when they need some work.

Guys, i'm not towing a car or a board lol... I currently tow a 800lb trailer with a 400lb motorcycle on my RAV4 V6. It does it no problem... I'm sure the lexus could too but I know I may want to tow 2 bikes in the distant future and I don't want to be limited (1600lbs total which is 100 over the 1500 quoted before).

Find one with the tow package installed and the 3500 lb limit.
