Default Transmission is history

Hey guys,

So I bought a used 15 RCF w/ 25k miles on it about a year and a half ago from an Acura dealership. Turns out the previous owner had some after market component in it that I was not aware of, and now my transmission is done because of it. That Acura dealership shut down due to the owner filing for bankruptcy. The Lexus dealership denied my warranty claim due to the after market part and now they are asking $12k to replace it. Anyone in the DFW area know the cheapest solution for this? If anyone could help I'd appreciate it!

Wow that's harsh. Do you have any info on the aftermarket component added?

No idea. The service tech told me it was something used for drifting. I’m guessing something to switch which gears it’s switching in and out of

Err I'd grill the service tech about it and get more info. That's not something I've heard of ever on our cars...

No one can offer you any help without full knowledge of the issue. You don't seem to have that. Can you get something in writing from the dealer detailing the aftermarket equipment? Something used for drifting is not an answer.

Yeah, you need full details on what the aftermarket part was in writing. Your car still is under powertrain warranty so Lexus should be covering it unless they can prove the aftermarket directly resulted in the transmission failing.

That sucks. I wish you luck.

I would ask to speak to the service manager tomorrow morning. Explain the situation that you bought it used and you did not install the part or modification, or were even aware of it, and if he could call and see if Lexus could make an exception and repair the transmission.

I am also very interested in what modification would cause a transmission failure.

Ok yeah I’ll call them first thing in the morning. I thought it was weird that they gave me no explanation of what it was either. It’s also weird that I’ve driven the car over 15k miles with it on and it hasn’t it been an issue until now. They gave me 2 options of $380 to take the part out and then file warranty or $180 to unplug it and then do the claim. Service tech said from the beginning that they probably won’t do anything and either option wouldn’t make a difference. I took the $180 option and no luck. I do remember seeing this button on the left of the steering wheel that lit up different colors when pressed but I never got around to getting it checked out. I bet that’s what it is. I’ll for sure post more info on it soon as I can.

I can only think of maybe, a throttle controller? But, I highly doubt that would cause such damage. It sounds like the dealer is just trying to avoid the warranty work. I'd call corporate and ask if they can maybe appoint a dealer to do the work.

I’ll try this if I don’t get any luck with the dealership. Thanks man

Sounds like an Apexi throttle controller but that doesn't cause that kind of damage.

Do you have a picture of the button?

Tried another dealer? If you try to trace the thing back you may find the said after market thing.

Yeah that’s it! The button does say apexi on it. You’re right, how would that damage my transmission? Any tips on how I can go about this?

I havn’t yet but I have thought about it. If the claim is rejected at one dealership does that mean it’ll deny everywhere or not necessarily?
