Default aftermarket head unit

Is it possible in the 4th gen GS? Has anyone installed one? The stock ML unit sucks in every single possible way.

Stock ML sucks in every possible way????

You won't be able to swap it, stock unit has climate control built in... You next option would be to change a car

I could be wrong here but I thought the head unit has nothing to do with the ML. You can replace the ML speakers and amplifier with your own.

I wish there is a way to upgrade the interface too. It starts to look outdated. The next best thing is a cell phone mirror system, which I'm considering.

Your mostly right, you can replace the speakers but the factory amp has to stay. The factory amp decodes the signal from the head unit and sends it to your speakers. What people like myself do is connect a LOC or digital processor to the wires coming out of the factory amp and use a aftermarket amp to power any speakers or subs. I think the ML system is overrated IF your someone who upgrades their stereo system. I have the standard system with a MS8 Digital processor and some subs. MS8 powers the stock speakers and i have another amp for my subs, even without aftermarket speakers the MS8 alone puts the ML system to shame.

When I initially installed the MS8 I didn't change or add any additional speakers. It improved the sound stage and gave me total control over the factory sub. I didn't increase the overall bass, i increased the level of bass coming out of the sub only. Bass was improved and most people looking for a little more thump would be happy. However I'm a bass head and had the MS8, two 12's powered by a 2000w mono amp in my old GS. Therefore after about a month I hooked up my original 12's and added my 2nd amp since a free air sub will never compare to subs in a box.

In regards to mirroring your phone, I have that as well. Beat-Sonic makes an add-on, works great however on a 2014 GS that little screen on the right doesn't go away when mirroring. It dims itself so that it doesn't affect what your watching but doesn't go away. I have a Tidal subscription and watch music video's vs Pandora or Bluetooth audio.

Have you tried to adjust the Audio settings in your ML car.
- Leave Bass/Treble Flat (some people like to have the Bass up 1 notch.
- Lower Mid by 2 notches.
- Turn Off Surround sound..
I myself really love the ML sound in my 2015 GS.
