Default black pearl alternative, diy

So I’m the type that likes to do things instead of buying it. It’s not the money, it’s more the joy of accomplishment.

Did my rear emblem. Took it off , cleaned with goo gone, washed it with soap and water then scuffed it with a scotch Brite pad.

Let it try then wipe with alcohol.

light coat of tamiya every 15 mins until you get to your preferred darkness.

Let dry dry for two hours.

Apply two - 2 coats of clear coat. 20 min wait in between.

let dry for 2 hours after final coat.

mount it back using 3m tape.

Came out pretty good. I’ll probably do this mod on mine grille surround next weekend.

Looks good. I have been looking for the right color. What color Tamiya did you use?

Looks really good. Did you do the “ISXX0” as well? Is it possible to remove the “ISXX0” badge and stick it back on straight? I suppose you could place tape to mark it.

no,I debadged the trunk. My suggestion is if you were to do it, put tape around the letters to mark were they are. That way when you stick them back, just follow the tape lines.

Looks great, thanks for posting! I’ve wanted the black pearl emblems for my IS 300 but haven’t been able to find any for sale that say “IS 300” that aren’t for a first gen IS.

This seems like a great (and much cheaper) solution!

edit: did you buy the Tamiya online or do any stores carry it?

Tamiya from amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000WS08M/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1_1_1?smid=A2OEG1SKNGURE1&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000WS08M/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1_1_1?smid=A2OEG1SKNGURE1&psc=1

definitely cheaper and the result is the same if not better. I didn’t have time to do it yesterday, I was finishing up my RSR springs, ppe headers and ark exhaust. She got a phat *** now!

Any closeups of the finish? my experience with dupli color clear coat is that it's not glossy (unless that's the look you're going for" and easily yellows after 6 months. you can get much higher/better quality clears online for not that much more w/ built in activator that dries super super glossy

yeah im aware, I’m hopeful it doesn’t yellow but it’s easy enough to redo if it does. I didn’t want it to be super glossy but it’s glossy just enough for me.

I just did my surround grille, what a pain in the butt to remove it from the grill, took the whole bumper off and the bazillion screws and clips that attaches it to the grill.

i'm gonna let the clear coat cure for a few hours before putting it back together. definitely like the look so far! at a certain angle it's blackish with a shine, at some angles it's metallic dark gray - just like the black pearl!
