My parents bought themselves the new Avalon today
as some my know, my parents loathe their 2015 ES350. They just cannot stand it. I think it has mostly to do with the remote touch interface and the somewhat stiffer than expected ride. It has 18K on it and I can tell they don’t particularly like it as it sits in their driveway for days and sometimes weeks at a time without moving. I think the black on black color helps reinforce how depressing they feel about their ES They generally drive their 4Runner while their Lexus is for longer drives.
For their entire lives, they generally been used to large cars, Fords in the 60s and 70s, the. Buicks, Oldsmobile’s and Cadillacs until the early 00s.
So today they looked at new Camry, test drive a RAV4 Hybrid (almost bought it) and then test drove the Avalon.
Now they cannot figure out what color they want. I said no black on black. I think they are going to go silver on graphite.
Not sure when they are going to get it. Has to be brought in as they only have two in stock.
I do know they got all the options for the limited. 10”Head ups display, real wood upgrade, 18” rims instead of 19”, among other things.
Here is a photo of their outgoing model. I will have a pic of the new one at some point when they get it.
Pic supplied by my brother.

Congratulations to them. Did they choose a regular Avalon or the Hybrid?
The Avalon underwent a significant mid-cycle improvement for the 2016 model year, which corrected several deficiencies in the 2013-2015 version. It, and the 2018 ES350 (not sure about the 2019), are probably the two Toyota/Lexus products I'd feel most at home in.
Probably a good move on their part if comfort was a priority. I have the 18" wheels on my Lacrosse, though I have not sampled the 19" wheels on the Avenir version to really compare them. Most of the reviews in the 20" option, however, say that it really screws up the ride.

I assume remote touch. However, my dad has never really liked going to the Lexus service side of the dealer (same location Toyota on one side whole Lexus IS on the other). And I think he just likely does not want to pay the premium, sometimes brands just don’t work for all people.

Definitely a Toyota family you have there.
The ES has been a wildly popular car. I feel bad your parents did not enjoy it. Tough customers, but valid reasons nevertheless. I think the next ES would have been a contender if the timing was there.
The new Avalon is a compelling selection, but you'd have to be a bold individual to get past the robotic, massive, gaping mouth. Good for them for having an open mind.

It was apparently either the Avalon's cave-entrance grille or the ES's spindle-grille. I agree I'm not a fan of either, but sometimes one has to simply look past cosmetic styling to see what is underneath, where Toyota and Lexus have always excelled in powertrain refinement and reliability.

I don't think the new ES would of done it for them. I think it is the remote touch which is the most frustrating. They are close to the age where they need to pass a written drivers renewal test in the upcoming years, so using the remote touch was not the easiest thing to do. I also think the black on black color is a tough one and really does not brighten up ones day.

Sweet, congrats! I bet they are set for a long time.
Back in the day, I liked the 1999 (I think) Avalon, and when it changed, I really hated the new style. Ditto when the Maxima went from 1999 to 2000. There was some really odd styling in the early 2000s (BMW 7 series). I still to this day see some 1999'ish Avalons running around (and Maximas of course even back to 1996), it's like they're never going to quit.

Makes sense they would like it better given their age, thats really what the Avalon is designed for.
