Default Cracked radiator - rattling sound

Just as I rolled over 100k with my 08 250, it lets me down.

Pulled into the driveway from work last night and got the CEL/Check VSC/Trac lights on the dash, with a higher than normal temp gauge (slightly over 1/2, usually sits at 1/4-3/8). I had noticed the e-fans running a little more than normal the past few days and the car sounded a little coarse for a second at startup when I left work. I restarted the car to move it over in the driveway and got a pretty good clatter/rattle as it started up, but went away when running (thought it might be the cam gears, but engine was still hot).

Looked under the hood and had coolant all over the front of the engine bay and the radiator hoses were empty. After it cooled some, I opened the radiator cap and poured in some water to try and find the leak. Squeezing the lower hose forced a spray of water out of a hairline crack in the top tank of the radiator, under the crossmember and facing the bumper. Oil level was fine, didn't look like coolant was mixing. New radiator, water pump, thermostat and cap should be here in a few days and the work will begin.

Questions for you all:

Haven't pulled the codes (code reader is in the mail), but will the CEL come on with overheating/low coolant/high engine temps?

What was that clatter on the hot start? Failing water pump? Engine bay was too wet to see anything leaking from the pump itself, but I thought the cam gears liked to rattle on cold starts (also, haven't had a rattling issue before).

You could have a valid P0217 over temperature code. Certainly possible.
How many miles?

The heads/top end is where the heat is generated so it could impact clearances. But if its never rattled on startup it seems odd it would do it now.

Let us know what code you find.

Around 101k miles. Pulled the codes and got a P0117, engine coolant temp circuit low. Don't think this is indicative of a bad temp sensor, maybe it read the low coolant level as a voltage out of range.

Pulled the bumper and confirmed - the radiator top tank had split right at the crimp, in the middle facing forward.

Replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat and radiator cap, refilled and burped the system, and monitored the ECT data stream on startup and while burping. Everything seems back to normal, no more codes. Water pump shaft had no play, only a slight rubbing sound when the impeller was turned. Don't think that was the cause of the rattle but went ahead and replaced it while I had easy access.
