Default 1991 - where are the tach and speedo needles ...

... when power is off?

I'm going to try to pull an instrument cluster from a junkyard. I don't want to waste my time swapping in one that's already broken.

There were changes in the early years. I'm not sure exactly when, so if you respond please include your year.
For example, on my '91, there is no peg, as there is on later models.

So ideally, someone out there has a 1991 with perfectly functioning tach and speedo gauges, and will be able to go out and look at them, with power off, using a flashlight to see them, and can tell me where the needles are. E.g., at zero, at negative 200 RPM, at negative 20 MPH, etc. Once I know this, I will take my own flashlight to the junkyard to do my own quick check on the potential donors.

I'll assume that when power is applied, but before starting the engine, the needles go to the lowest point on the gauges, but let me know if that is not right.

Thanks!

I know exactly how you feel, so here are the answers to your questions for 1990-1994 models, at the very least (mine is a 1991):
  • when the instrument cluster is off and when it is initially turned on (before starting the car), the speedometer and tachometer needles should be exactly at 0. Not above or below
  • when the cluster is powered on, the needles should remain at 0. They may move slightly, but should not move a lot.
  • 1990-1994 clusters do not have pegs below the 0 marker to hold the needles in place. Not sure if this was added later

Exactly what I was looking for - thanks. I'll now be able to do the quick check before pulling any candidate parts.
