Hey guys, I am trying to buy a new car for my mother. The car I am looking at is a 2013 Honda CRV EXL AWD with 76,000 miles. Anything I should look out for? Any problems people been having for that Generation CRV? How durable is that CVT drivetrain, i have heard that they dont last, is this true.

Consumer Reports gives the 2013 a pretty clean bill of health in the reliability department...no major problems. Older ones had some problems with the climate-control.

That generation CR-V didn't have a CVT, it had a more traditional 5 speed automatic transmission paired with its 2.4L inline 4. You should probably seek out a CR-V forum.

So what year did the CVT make its way to the CRV?

The CVT came in 2015 as I recall.

We've got a 2012 CRV EX-L and its been flawless. There are very few owners who have reported a start up rattle that there is a TSB fix for but otherwise they are pretty well built. Good luck with your search.

JDR76 is correct......2015, though that year was not an all-new design for the CR-V. The new CVT transmission essentially came with the rest of the mid-generation face-lift that year.

Can't go wrong with Honda or Toyota. Would pass if this was an American brand SUV.

I know you mentioned CRV, but if you are open to others, take a look at Subaru Forester. My son wanted to replace his 03 Infiniti G35 sedan with small suv. I strongly suggested CRV (we have had an Accord and an Element), but he did his own research and wanted Forester. After doing my own research the Forester was an excellent choice. A generally boring design, but very functional, reliable, and holds resale value. Consumer Reports #1 small suv. Current generation Forester design in 2014 with update in 2017. MPG 26 city, 32 hwy. As an aside, we were in Asheville, NC a few weekends ago and it seems like a third of the vehicles there are Subarus, mostly Outback and Forester.

Subarus have an excellent AWD system (arguably the best in the business), but many of them have had a CVT for a number of years now, and the non-turbo four cylinders have a oil-use issue up to about 2014-2015.

I do like Subarus and I feel that they are under appreciated and overlooked. But my mother has her heart set on a CRV or RAV4. But I will definatly recromend a Subaru Forester to her.

I have a 2014 Honda CR-V with just close to 43,000 miles , the car around New York City, 20-22 MPG when I go out on a out of town trip I get about 27-28 MPG. I find the car much smoother and not as jerky feeling as a 2016 RAV4 which I have as well but it is slightly louder the road noise on the Honda. I haven't had any issues except the battery which got replaced in just over 2 years of ownership and a feeling of the window open on my front driver window that has been there since I got it, but with the music it does disappear. The RAV4 returns pretty much similar mileage on the highway , though tends to be slightly better in the city returning 22 MPG more often.
