Default Killer deal New GS, but.....

Found a new F Sport in LA for 7k off of sticker. Only problem is you have to pay California sales tax plus, I would have to pay sales tax in my home state which wouldn't be good. Anyone here a non native of California bought a car there and had this issue? Last time I bought a new car in Ohio and only paid sales tax in my state Illinois where I registered it. According to the salesman I spoke with if I had the car shipped to me I wouldn't have to pay California sales tax verses physically picking the car up. Not sure I could buy one without seeing the car firsthand. Thoughts??

That's not usually how it works, most states when selling to "foreigners" don't make you eat the local sales tax, but you will have to pay any sales tax in the state of registration. Check with the CA dealer...

I did ask. The salesman says California has to be paid sales tax too.

Not really. It depends which dealer you contact. Spoke with a high volume dealer in Texas and he would only sell for MSRP on his inventory.

Wait.. are we talking a Lexus GS? @MSRP?
not sure if any in the history of GS paid full MSRP.
also, you are looking specifically for RWD? Figured IL is a AWD state

just checked your state.. purchase is $5k off right off the bat.
leasing will be much more I am thinking $7k-$9k easy.
check truecar.

Yes on the MSRP of a GS. I live in Illinois and looking out of state for a RWD. Where did you find that a new 2018 GS is $5k right off the bat?

I can't even find where trucar lets you search nationwide. I only gives me the option to see what's available locally.

I am in TN and I bought my 2016 GS from TX. Went to the dealership in TX and picked the car up in person. I did not pay any TX tax. I paid all taxes in TN and that too by myself. I made it clear to the dealership at the outset that I will pay all my taxes (and do my registration) myself and do not want any help from them. All they gave me was a temporary tag which was valid for 60 days.

I think California is playing by a different set of rules compared to all other states. They want their piece of the pie too. I never realized this until I spoke with the salesman out there yesterday. His price was the best out of all the other dealers across the country that I've spoken with. I would obviously pay taxes in my home state when I register the car but, I don't want to pay California sales tax too. This rule is set by the state of California and not the dealer.

Hi.. Most states will give you an exemption for taxes paid to another state at time of registration. A quick Google shows Illinois will only charge you the difference in tax if the tax you paid in another state is less than your particular Illinois use tax.

Good luck, but I'd ask Cali dealer for temporary registration to avoid the tax so you can get it back to Illinois. Barring that, just pay the Cali tax and be exempt for that amount in Illinois. Call your county tax collector/dmv to confirm. I've been able to do this in every state I've ever moved to/bought a different vehicle from.
