Back in May of 2017 my rx300 01 started slipping gears on the transmission. I put it into reverse and gave it gas but it wouldn't budge. Same was happening when in drive and drive 2. I was able to make it home by swapping from drive to drive 2 to neutral and back sometimes having to stop turn off the engine and startup again and do the same. I received two dash lights the check engine light and VSC lights came on. I got it home and tested it with my OBDII scanner and got error codes P0420 and P0500. Before this in the past I received P0420 and did some preliminary research and concluded that it was the Catalytic Converter which I had replaced at a shop and it went away. Yet now it seems it has returned with the new error code P0500. I did some research on the P0500 error code and determined it might be a sensor. I had a mechanic replace Dorman 917-603 Input Transmission Speed Sensor and APDTY 028714 Transmission Output Revolution Speed Sensor and also cleared the codes with my scanner. The problem reoccurred so I went back online to my mechanic's site and scheduled for them to come back out to replace a "Speed Sensor" that is accordingly located on the side of the transmission housing. That's all the information I know about this last sensor until he arrives to replace it. If this doesn't resolve this issue I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas for the next step to take in trouble shooting this issue. I just assumed that counting I had already had the Catalytic Converter replaced the first time getting the error code P0420 and it went away until this time it was the P0500 error code triggering it this time. I"m really hoping it's not my whole transmission that is shot counting the big price tag that entails yet I seem to be at an in pass on options in troubleshooting. How about soliciting help from a renowned transmission shop. They can analyze the fluid and tell you if something is broken inside.

The sensor replacement technique can solve a bad sensor, but there is a chance that the sensor is working properly and reporting that the speed of the input shaft does not match with the speed of the output shaft in the gear that the transmission has selected. [You can have busted torque convertor etc]

Maybe others can give better advice. I have lot of regard for member Thomas, hopefully he can weigh in.

Thank you for the quick reply Salim. I've got a quote from a transmission shop to rebuild the transmission and they quoted me 2.5 k to 3 k. I will know this morning at 10 am if it's that last speed sensor that I'm having this mechanic come out to my house to replace. It's really hard to drive with it slipping the way it is. I will have to have it towed to a transmission shop if this last sensor doesn't resolve the issue. After this mechanic installed the APDTY sensor it seemed to stop idling so high at startup so that's a good sign. It wasn't until I hit the highway with it after the fact until I hit about 50 mph did it start the issue again that being the reason I had to turn around and come home again. Ok well that sensor turned out to be the input transmission speed sensor. The mechanic went to test drive the car and he stated that it was most likely the torque converter. I've decided to bite the bullet and just have it towed to a transmission shop located locally. Worst case scenario it's the whole transmission he quoted me 2.6 k for that so that's not as bad as 3 k. And good thing about getting them to look at it is I get warranty on all the work done. Thanks for the advice. I will post back when I find out what the cause of the problem was.
