Burping coolant
Just completed head gasket job on 93 GS 300 with 210,000 miles and I am having a hard time getting air out of system. Top hose feels like there is no coolant in it. I get heat but when I drive city it is 3/4 high on temp and goes to half or normal when on freeway. I have topped it off when it is cold but i want to know the correct way to burp it. Please help. I love this car! Thank you!

Really
Wow! I got better responses from my Rodeo forum than this place. So many will look at the thread but no one is giving any input. This is not very encouraging to contribute to this place! Thanks for making a Newbie Lexus owner feel welcomed!

This is the first time I've seen your thread.
Basically you can warm up the car with the radiator and coolant reservoir cap off. If there is air trapped in the system, some bubbles should come out as it warms up and the thermostat opens. You might get some coolant pushing out too because its going to expand. With the cap off like this though, it should eventually start draining coolant from the reservoir into the engine. When that starts to happen, the system is probably burped and you can put the cap back on the radiator. Well it'll be spilling out at that point if you don't.
So basically you can't fill the coolant completely with the engine cold.
Make sure you don't take off the cap once its hot and don't take that cap off until its been sitting a couple hours. Even then, cover it with a towel, push down hard and turn slowly. If it starts exploding out into the towel, screw the radiator cap back on don't just let it explode out. My Dad has a bunch of scars from just taking a cap off ***** nilly.
