Lightbulb 2010 and towing?

I have stayed away from the GX (last generation) since I felt it was underpowered to tow my small travel trailer (5000#). My local dealer (well the one I work with ~500 miles away) suggested that I consider a new 2010 since it meets the new SAE towing standards, thus towing has improved? I am comparing this to the 2010 Touareg 2 TDI.

Any opinions on the towing capabilities with this? My current 2004 Chevy tahoe is under powered in my opinion for towing.

Tow capacity for the new 2010 GX is 6,500 lb (2,948 kg) (with available tow-hitch receiver). The new V8 is a 4.6L with 301HP and 329 lb.ft. of torque.

Here's more info on the specs for the GX:

Follow up question - I didn't specify I wanted a tow hitch on my GX, silly me, I just assumed they'd all have them. Well the one "with my name on it" does not have one. I asked could they add one (heck, if they can add the entertainment package then why not a tow hitch) and he said he wasn't sure, they'd have to look at one that doesn't have it to be sure. Why would they not be able to add??

They will be able to add it. The only problem would be limited availability for GX 460 parts. All of the GX 460's have tow prep, even if they don't have the hitch.

Which dealer have you ordered your car through? If they don't have the hitch available in their parts department, you can check at Sewell Lexus or see if you can get it installed at the port.

Sure the GX can tow that much but how does it do it. Like my chevy tahoe, it can tow that much but feels underpowered to do so. Any idea on how the GX does in this regard (the engine is smaller but has more gears and a different gear ratio, supposed to be for towing improvement?)

Great to know, thanks. Ironically, Sewell is the dealer. . . . you'd think they'd know that. Oh well.

The hitch is a port installed item. Any dealer can order it and install it. It might cost more than 450.00 I was quoted to add it at the port...

So is your car already at the port? When is it due to arrive?

The port price already includes dealer mark up. They shouldn't charge you any more than that.

Craig, how exciting! Tell us about it! Have you negotiated a price yet? Mine just told me sticker price but we haven't discussed $$ yet. What are you planning to push for?

I have researched all the currently available 3rd-party hitches for the 2011 GX 460. They all have a max of 5000 lb towing capacity (weight carrying or weight distributed). But if I get the official one from Lexus, it is 5000 lb WC and 6500 lb WD (But installed it's close to $750!). The 3rd party ones are $122 - $164 before installation ($65). If I had known that, I would have gotten the one (1500 miles from my dealer) that had the hitch already installed ($459 option). Ugh!!!

In the GST (Gulf States Toyota) that would be Texas, they are a PIO with a class 3 hitch. That relates to no more than 5000 lbs. max. The GX is rated for 6500 lbs. capacity, which would require a class IV hitch.

I chose not to have the hitch installed at the time of delivery.
