I have 94 LS400 (NON VVT-i Model) and need to change the cam seal because of leak.There are a lot of info for vvt-i engine but mine is non vvt-i engine. I could not get info on how to get to the cam seals. can i just remove the cam gear without removing the camshaft? Do I have to remove the Distributor housing too? is the cam bolt right or left threaded? I already removed timing belt water pump and crank seal. Do you think I have to remove the valve cover to get to the cam seals?
Help please?

Thank you for the response. I checked for more than three days before i post my questions. there is nothing i got pertaining to my questions from the link. i have some idea how to do it but not sure for the lack of additional info i need. I still need help,

I will tell you this: my nephew done mine, and it was quick, I didnt watch, the bolts should come right out (with out moving pulleys) and lift pulleys off. then take a screwdriver and pop the seals out, and just push the new in and replace the pulleys and tighten. (just dont rotate the camshafts) (like the crankshaft seal)

O boy it is is too though to take out that camshaft bolt. I am using beaker bar and self made cam gear holder did not budge. i am about to put some more lever on it. will any one of you respond to my original question ? if the bolt is right or left threaded? why is so much hard like this? help please.

I got it out with 6 ft fence pipe that i bought from HomeDepot and home made cam gear holder. I am ok for now . thanks club lexus.

time to invest in an impact wrench? it is threaded as standard, righty tighty lefty loosey, both gears but you already knew that .

be careful removing the seals with a screwdriver. I prefer to use a paint can lid remover you can get for free at your local home improvement store. it's bent at the tip like a claw to give you better grip on the seal to pull it out. be careful to NOT scratch/gouge the camshaft surface.

Thanks Timmy, I have several of those hooks laying around, BUT I also have a few screwdrivers too....
as good as I was with a screwdriver, you didnt need a "hook"
when you made your living with tools you KNEW how to use them..

Thanks Billydpowe for your suggestion on using lid remover. i tried to use it but the cam seal is so tight that it unbent the removers tip, I am trying all methods in a way that do not score the shaft and the surrounding.

These work well for me particularly the 90 degree and the hook. If they haven't been abused should be sharp enough to pierce the seal. Do so in the center so you don't score metal on either side and pull it straight out. If you can't poke a hole with the tool you can use a small Brad nail to create a hole then use a hook type tool or even a small screw to grab the seal.

Thanks Bradland for your reply. I followed your method to take out the crank seal using the harbor fright(HF) tool which is similar but not pro type like the one you shown(snapon ones). however when I follow the same methods, with the lid remover and the tools from HF on the cam seals it did not work. the cam seals are too tight so they easily bend on it. I am gone follow your second suggestion Brad nail type using hook . i have to go out and buy like prying tool to make the hook.

using drill , screw and claw hammer did the job easy; although it is scary at first. using 1-1/2 and 1-1/4 " pvc couplings helps to set it in too.
