Default 3rd brake light - in the rear hatch - problem with blowing bulbs

So for years when it is psycho hot out my car wants to blow the bulb in the rear hatch/deck lid ... the one that is at the top under the piece of plastic you have to pop off.
Now - just today as I was going to replace yet another $4 bulb.. it dawned on me.. look at the connection for the bulb. And it looks terrible....

So my question is this.. after you have the plastic piece off and you have removed the assembly with the bulb in it.. look at the wiring harness..

Am I right that there is a piece plugged into the wiring harness that then connects to the assembly ? If so.. I need to buy that piece.

Can anyone help ? Thanks kindly, Brian in Branson, MO

after a call to my Lexus dealer in Springfield.. who at first told me that the entire wiring harness was needing to be replaced.. he then asked me - so you need the socket the bulb goes into ?? and I said yes.. and he said - OK.. that will cost 10.24

I will gladly pay that and drive 80 miles round trip to pick it up. It will save me from spending $4 every time I start the car with a new bulb in it.

I thought my bulbs were going bad too until I realized the socket was bad. One of the contacts is broken.

I think I used a folded piece of aluminum foil to extend the broken contact.

If the socket is available cheap that would be better

I think the 3rd brake light is a 921 bulb. This is a replacement socket that fits that bulb

That might work. This is what is in there now.
There is not a lot of depth behind the reflector and lens housing that it plugs into.
You can see my cheap fix sticking out of the socket.

Here it is : SOCKET PLUG 90075-99005 :: I plugged it in just now in the dark with a tiny flashlight and it works perfectly.
Even the old bulb that was on the fritz is in there now.. so I went ahead and bought 2 more at the Wal-Mart (cheapest Sylvania's)
