I am planning on painting my calipers this weekend and was hoping to get some input from anybody that has done it already.
I decided to go with the VHT Blue Caliper Paint, and the Gloss Clear Coat.
On the can the instructions say to wait 10 minutes of dry time before putting on another coat and after an hour not to put any more coats for 7 days.
My plan was to do 3 - 4 coats of the blue, then put on the reflective vinyl decal I got from http://www.wrappersdelite.net/buy-decals.html , and then do 2 - 3 light coats of the gloss clear coat.
I figure this may run over the hour time limit.
I wanted to know what other people have done and how has it helt up as far as how many coats with color, clear, and adding the decal in what time frames.
I've done this numerous times with zero problems. I typically have used three coats, with a minimum of ten minutes between coats. Before applying the decal, I waited a little longer but not much. Once the decal was on, I would apply the clear coat. I would also add that I cleaned the calipers beforehand. Once with caliper cleaner (way too messy for me), but normally with rubbing alcohol with a rag and brush. Much easier and dries very, very quickly.
BTW, the results were still 100% for well over a year (two BMW cars and my GS350). I run my car though the local car wash 3-4 times a month too.
Great thank you for the input. I really didn't want to have to go through the trouble of having to prepare everything twice. Where id you get the rear decals? Do you have a clear shot of the decal on the rear? I had just planned on doing decals on the front since they did not have a rear decal in the reflective vinyl.
Dallasdave got it right! I did the same and has no issues. To prepare mine I cleaned the calipers and then used a scuff pad. After that I primed them and then added 3 coats of color , applied the decals, and then 3 coats of clear. No problems so far.
For the decals, it was eBay. This isn't the exact Seller I used, but looks to be the same. They are so cheap, I ordered two sets. That way there are multiple decals (in case you screw up) and different sizes. Just make certain and order the specific color you want.
For the rear calipers, you need a caliper cover. With the help of this forum, I found Honda part number 45218-TX4-A00 (~$15/each). It is the correct size, but you need to cut two tabs off of each cover. The cover is then attached to the caliper via high temp silicone. I realize this sounds a little strange, but it works and looks very good...even OEM. I'll find the forum post that gives you all the detail later.
I actually did mine with G2 caliper paint. My 1st time trying it out and actually came out awesome, took really long and very long wait times between coats. This was a brushed system so was a bit messy and longer drying times. But came out WAAYYYYY better than I thought it would (for being my 1st time).
You can also do plastidip, I plan on doing mine soon. If you don't have a sprayer or something you can use the black cans as a base. Then if you want to do a color you can get a coat of DYC topcoat and get some custom pearls and mix it into a preval sprayer bottle and get a custom color.

Did not get to it this weekend since my reflective decals had not come in yet so looking to this weekend to do it.
