Just saw the LC in person.
Compared to the RC
LC is longer and wider in the front
LC has less rear seat space

Given the engine is the same, is there a mechanical/technological reason the LC is so much bigger?
Is the space in the front filled with parts that necessitate the size of the car? Or was it an aesthetic reason and there is just more empty space between parts?

The LC is a GT car poised to take on the Maserati Gran Turismo, BMW 6-Series to name two. The LC has more exotic materials, it is a flagship for the brand. The RC F is set against M4, C63 AMG, ATS-V. Keep in mind they don't have the same engine, you referred to RC which starts with a 2.0T, 3.5 V6(AWD), 3.5L V6, then the 5.0L V8. The V8 is simply the beginning entry point for the LC. Eventually the long awaited FI V8 will join.

RC has a wheelbase of 107.5in (185in total length)
LC has a wheelbase of 113.0in (187in total length)
4-Series wheelbase of 110.6in (182in total length)
6-Series wheelbase of 112.4in (192in total length)

The RC and LC have a similar length but the wheelbase is larger than the RC. That said much of that space is used in the long hood to accommodate secondary intake, lower engine position, tube sensors for pedestrian crashes, strut tower suspension etc..

Actually LC rear legroom is over 5" more than RC.

according to lexus.com, LC has combined front/rear leg room of 42", while RC has 45.4"

Combined?!? Numbers you're quoting is front only. By "combined", I assume you mean front+rear, RC and LC almost equal at ~72" (according to lexus.com)

Anyways, manufacturers don't really make 2+2 for back seat accommodations. They do it for lower insurance. They're cheaper to insure than an actual 2 seater.

Even if there were enough rear legroom, only the headless horseman can sit in the back seat. The rear seats are for small bags, a golf driver, small child, or your dog.

All kidding aside, the rear seat only has enough legroom if the front seat is pushed pretty far forward. I had to push the passenger seats forward to barely have enough knee room and that is still pretty tight in the back.
