My son has been through a few BMW's and spent a couple of years working at a Porsche/Audi/BMW service center. His advice to me when I was looking at the X5 option was to just flat stay away from them if they are out of warranty. The maintenance costs will build fast and hit hard. Another guy who is a used car salesman who bought an older Nissan Frontier from another son told me his rule of thumb is this... "If it's European, you're a payin'!" I don't even get tempted to look at any BMW's unless they have the diesel engine, and even though the 645's look awfully sweet to me, I'm not biting on that line of vehicles at all.

In the end, I'd rather own and drive the "egg" (Lexus RX) as compared to a BMW.

My experience with an out of warranty BMW was terrible and expensive. My LS400 went nearly 300,000 miles without much investment. Just a perspective for you.

Some people have to get experience to learn, Some people learns from others' experience. Sensible/reasonable mind should choose RX. Even if BMW were as reliable as Lexus, every thing cost way more for keeping BMW.

BMW = Ultimate Leasing Machine ....... pretty much good for 50K miles. Then, all the parts need to be replaced. That's how they make the car. this leasing, pats recycling and re-leasing business is so good to BMW that they doubled up on the recycled parts business (they use the guts of the old part and re manufacture them as new). this is why BMW actually buys back all used parts from dealers and repair people. They got it down to a science.(of fleecing cash from your wallet)

op. you should drive both and it maybe it will be clear which you like and dont like.

you should be able to see the differences in steering seats and feel, and thst by itself can help you decide.

dont worry about maintenance if you dont even know which vehicle you like better.

Better is a relative term.
Drives better - BMW. Reliable - Lexus.
At that vehicle age, latter trumps the former, so there we have it.

My son offered this advice: "...Dad, you Lease a German car - but you Buy a Japanese car...".

J D Power's dependability study is based on three year old models. So the 2012 study shows Lexus #1 and BMW #20. As far as maintenance Lexus is the third least expensive to maintain and BMW was the most expensive. This is really a no brainier.

I recently sold our BMW X3 and bought a RX400h after previously also owning a Toyota Harrier RX300 (the Lexus is badged as a Harrier in many parts of the world). The BMW is sportier and can be driven hard into corners if you like that kind of thing. Fit and Finish is similar for both vehicles. BUT, as others have noted, BMW repairs are not infrequent and are very, very expensive. I still own a BMW Z3 and even taking it to a non-BMW shop is expensive because of the cost of parts. We bought the Harrier with about 70K km's and sold it after adding about 50K more. Our only costs were new tires (once after the initial purchase), oil and filters. No repairs were ever necessary. The X3 needed new brakes (warped disks (twice), pads several times $$$), new front wheel bearings ($$$). No more BMW's for me once it is time to get rid of the Z3.

Well, you definitely need to look well beyond just year, miles, CarFax & price. Have you looked at reliability stats for each? Maintenance & repair costs? Insurance costs? Have you read reviews for each?

This. Always be very specific with what you mean when you use the word "better" on any topic.

I have owned a couple of BMWs but they were late 80s models. I have owned several lexus. When I look at BMW I automatically think of the repair cost. In my experience, the parts alone cost a fortune for a BMW even if I do repairs myself. Every Lexus I have owned has had over 200k before needing any major repairs.

No brainer - go with the RX. 100k miles on a Lexus isn't even break-in miles. See the video about the million mile LS
