96 LS400 EGR pipe repair
My EGR pipe at the accordion joint with age has cracked and I don't really see any easy way of replacing it. I went to a local muffler shop who quoted me $1100 to fix this. The Lexus dealership said it is a $260 part and 6.5 hours labour to install.
Does this sound a little obscure for this repair? I feel like this is something that needs to be fixed but $1100 sounds a little much to me.
What's your guys opinion on it?

I pull those off every 95-97 I see in the junkyard if they're good. Most of the time they're bad like yours but I've got a few that are good. The part is $125 if you want to avoid the stealership.
Its really not that hard of a job. Remove the front exhaust section with the cars from the car first. There are 6 14mm head bolts. A 1/2" wobble extension is your friend here. Remove the 10mm head bolt from the clamp at the exhaust pipe connection under the back seat. Then some long 3/8 extensions and a universal allow you to get at the upper EGR pope bolts.

$125. ? Where at? Not at a wrecking yard.
And if anyone does not want to pay the price to fix it then do it yourself. Just remember if you snap off some bolts you likely will need to remove the engine to fix it.

They charge me a couple bucks for them at the yards.

$1,100 is super high. Personally the job would take me 2-3 hours if I REALLY took my time and ran into a few snags. But, if there is a book time for that component the shop will charge that.
And, you don't need a lift. A floor jack and jack stands are all that is needed. But, if you're new to wrenching I would skip this job as a learning experience.

Shop around for install prices. Anyone that gives a real high price is trying to tell you they do not want to do that job. I'm sure high price is to cover a warranty and other problems that may come up doing the job.

I paid someone $20 to weld in-between the accordion joints to strengthen this flimsy pipe. Youve probably seen how thin the metal is in between those accordions, so I think it made better sense to beef those up.
I haven't had a leak and it's been over a year and a half now.
Removing the pipe on the other hand is a feat that I don't ever want to do again. I ended up stripping the upper most catalytic converter stud, which forced me to have to drill through it and use a nut and bolt due to the stud seizing inside the converter flange.
It took me 3 days under the car trying a tiny butane torch to propane then finally Mapp gas and it still wouldn't budge so I had to drill starting with a small bit and progressively going larger until I got to the size of the nut and bolt. Pain in the ***.

I went through this in my 97. the dealership will quote you 6+ hrs of labor bc their book shows that you have to remove the transmission to get to the top bolts. I can certainly tell you that is not necessary but you do need LONG extensions, universal joints, and a lot of patience to get the EGR pipe off but it is doable.
parts are under $100. you need to removed the pass side catalytic converter (which can be a pain if you live in a snow area = rusted exhaust bolts). I recommend using new parts bc a used one will fail again eventually and quickly.
