Self Driving or Assist? Do you like it or no? The Gladiator Thread
I expect healthy debate with some intense moments but absolutely no personal attacks.
There are Autonomous ratings and some brands are higher than the others. Tesla is obviously the most widely used and some will argue the best system. I do believe Mercedes is the only level 3 system and they accept full responsibility if anything happens under that system.
Personally I feel Lexus was right calling their system a drivers assist. I drove a LS with it and it was something else. A very safety oriented thing so there was no way to do dumb tiktok tricks inside.
I definitely can see its usefulness on the highway. Still as a car enthusiast it’s hard to let the wheel go to a computer.
Again, NO PERSONAL ATTACKS. Let your arguments out.

.
that’s awesome. Test drive the LS in the USA? Available in every state? Only other vehicle that has it is the Mirai
I haven't tried FSD or anything with driving assist.
However, I try to read all the posts about it and the improvements made over time here on CL.
This is my most trusted source for this info, real members who have it and use it.
And, while completely off topic on how long people people are keeping their cars, this "new" tech is a consideration for many of us on whether to buy a newer car.
However, I still feel this self driving and assist topic is deserving of it's own separate thread, like here, IMO.
I think the poll doesn't accurately reflect the range of options available here. For instance I have and use my driving assist features, I wouldn't want to be self driven entirely autonomously. I wouldn't buy another car without some level of autonomous driving aid.
In fact one of the main reasons why I don't want to keep our Pacifica is that it has no form of lane centering technology. If we do keep it I will buy a Comma AI unit to give it that capability:

Wouldnt that be#2? Use sparingly. That assumes the next vehicle would
have it too and you continue to use it sparingly.
I use my systems on long trips once I get tired past the 10/12 hour mark, ACC is used whenever I am not actively "driving" on trips as well.
I have rented a tesla to try FSD out and have used the systems from various other makes as well, in near all cases it is more anxiety inducing to me to have to manage the car like a student driver and getting pissed at it lack of skill at taking windows and exerting pressure in the same ways I would. I would have very high interest in a system that allows me to dispatch a car somewhere with zero oversight and will be getting one when that is possible

I think that anxiety would lessen as time goes on and your experience with it grows. I used to be super weirded out by adaptive cruise and lane centering and those things don't stress me out anymore. I just use those tools when the situation calls for it and don't when it doesn't.
For instance I don't use them in moving traffic where you need people to move right so you can pass because they irritate me there, they hang back too much etc. But on an open road where I can set the cruise to 80 and let it do most of the driving for sure I use them. In slow traffic I use them and just let the car do its thing.

It has not changed for me, the irritation constantly builds when it can't do it as well as me. Like minding a average driver but worse since I can just reach up and drive the car myself instead of being in the other seat lol!

Key is your mindset...it doesn't do it instead of you, it helps you do it. Just use it for scenarios where it makes driving more enjoyable and not for when it doesn't. For me when I'm rolling down the highway at 80 without having to move through traffic its nice, I can look around some and find music to listen to etc. In stop and go bumper to bumper traffic it can manage all of that and thats great. I'm never comparing its driving to mine because its not "driving"
I don't think its something you get used to in anything you rent, you have to live with it

I like ACC on long trips but that's about it, I also don't use the auto steer as it doesn't track as well as I want and can't micro correct or dodge road imperfections
