Default Intermittent Noise after driving for 30-40 minutes

I have a 2022 GX 460 that I am hearing a noise that sounds like brake vibration/squeal that occurs after driving for 30-40 minutes. I brought it to the dealership 2x and both times they were able to replicate the noise but not enough to pinpoint the issue. They even replaced my front brakes as they thought that was the culprit, but the noise returned the very next time I drove the vehicle. I've attached a few videos of this occurring while driving (turn up the volume and you should be able to hear the squeal). Anyone have a similar issue or able to shed some light on this? Dealership honestly hasn't been a help, but sort of understandable as the noise isn't consistent.

Yes, they thought the noise was coming from the brakes after heating up (driving for a bit) and the pads were touching because of a "film" that can build up. Luckily they were under warranty, so it didn't cost me anything, but it was clearly not the issue.

Wow, second thread in a month for me with a weird GX oddity. I also have a 2022 that does this from time to time. It started happening to me about 2 months ago and seems to come and go every other week. I took it to the dealership twice, who weren't able to replicate it. Mine also doesn't occur until after at least 30 minutes of highway driving. Right before this happened, I had my rear brakes replaced at that dealer, so I had thought it was related, but they said they inspected all my brakes in general and didn't find anything out of spec. I took a few videos and recordings and the dealer opened up a ticket with Lexus to see if they had heard of it happening before. I'm going to follow this in case anyone finds a root cause.

From inside the car, it sounds like a high pitch hissing sound while driving at speed. With the windows down, it's a hissing sound, but sounds like metal on metal scraping.

How many miles do you have on your GX? That is the same exact noise.

Have you had any work done on the car recently, other than brakes? Trying to find common themes here.

Most recent service was in February. I had them drain and fill engine coolant (wanted to get ahead of that interval), state inspection/emission test, oil and filter change, and then under the brake job it says they "replaced the rear brakes, replaced the shims, and machined the rear rotors."

In March I heard the noise start and took it to the same local dealer who couldn't identify the issue. Invoice says they "performed an inspection of all brakes, couldn't find signs of rubbing on the backing plates or debris around brake components. No safety concerns found."

To note, I drove a bit more this week and the sound was quite prevalent, so I plan to call the dealer again in the morning. I have a second dealer I could try for a second opinion, but it's a bit more of a hike.

My issue seems resolved, so far. I took it to my nearby dealership who kept my GX for a week. I specifically asked for a lead tech to take for a drive, and luckily the grinding/scraping sound came back on after about 10 minutes of driving with them. The tech asked a bunch of questions about my driving habits, scenarios when it appears, etc., and specifically mentioned to me it did not sound related to the brakes.

My diagnostics sheet from the dealer indicated "Advised to check for possible issue w/ transfer case front facing compression flange and shield." They replaced my front transfer case output seal and applied grease to the contact surfaces due to insufficient lubrication between transfer case front output seal and deflector. The pic the tech sent me showed the front of the transfer case was bone dry where grease should have been.

Additional details from the work:
  • Quantity 1: PN 90312-23001 Type V Oil Seal
  • Quantity 1: PN 90179-22016 Nut
  • Quantity 1: PN 90311-41017 Type T Oil Seal
  • Quantity 2: PN 90080-17187 Lock nut
  • Quantity 2: PN 91553-E1035 Flange bolt
  • Quantity 2: PN 00279-DGOLF DIFF Gear Oil LF
I took it on the highway four times so far for an hour each, and the noise is gone. Will report back if it starts causing issues again. Cost was completely covered under the powertrain warranty.

This is what I was thinking. After 30 min of driving and braking, possibly the rear rotors expand ever so slightly--making contact with the parking brake shoes.

If this is not the culprit, it must be something else to do with heat.

Interesting their is a TSB for the output seal, TCCN had the leak, and they also have a propeller shaft that is TSB.

20-23 has some interesting powertrain concerns.

The TSB on the driveshaft is also interesting since the TSB addresses the "clunk" that end users have said improved when you grease the zerks.

Is the TSB you're talking about "L-TT-0319-22"?
