My car already does this visually, and I ignore it. If it beeped, I'd just code it out.

Encrypted ECUs with OTA updates to the encryption key and always on requirements will put an end to any end user choice and ability to change things. It's going to suck in a few years

My ECU is encrypted, receives OTA updates and has some features that can only be activated online, yet I still have full access to coding.

I can't add new features that aren't in the Vehicle Order (VO)--as those require authentication codes--but I can change existing ones and delete things from the VO (and reinstall them later, assuming I took a backup of the auth code).

My last OTA update reset much of my coding, so I had to do it again. But the "feature" I removed from the VO did not come back, nor did any of its settings revert on the update. I suspect that at least in BMWs case, this would be a VO "feature" that could simply be deleted.

For now, it will progress to become more and more aggressive in the future. I've never seen tech companies allow more end user control as time goes on lol!

Might not ever happen to your car but newer ones will have this become an issue I'm sure

I can think of a few users who will be enthusiastically in support of this new law

This basic idea of alerting speeding drivers is nothing new. Back in the 1960s, long before computers took over most vehicle functions, some Buicks had a separate needle on the speedometer, manually-rotated by a **** and and marked by a small yellow ball, that, when set to any given speed (presumably at or near the limit), set off a buzzer when the driver exceeded it. The image is from a 1963 Wildcat, but I had a similar device on my 1965 Electra.

It will for a bit, until someone comes out with some sort of ecu plugin that blocks updates and connections that phone home. Just like DNS and ad blockers for ad's.

Hopefully so. I have a feeling it will also need to emulate the phone home sequence or it will lock itself out like many types of modern software does unless you have a pirated version

I'm not honking at speeders .

Sounds like a great way to instigate road rage with nut jobs. Lol

What a waste; so now car manufacturers have to customize their cars sold in CA?

says it'll be taking effect by 2032, so still a few more years to get the bill overturned

I don't think it is a device to actually honk the horn at someone.....more likely a simple beeper on the dash to warn the driver.

While there is no audible alert, my car does let me know visually that I'm speeding. It's like a fun little minigame.

Here's a built-in Speeding-Alert that comes standard in ALL vehicles LOL.
