Just picked up a 1994 LS as some members may already know. I plan on giving it a tune up as well as an oil change as you should buying any craigslist car. One thing I plan on doing is cleaning out the MAF sensor, but what do you guys recommend as far as giving it a tune up? I know there's spark plugs and what not, but any advice on what I should do to increase MPG's or power on a 23 year old LS?

If your doing spark plugs and ignition wires, I would recommend doing the distributor caps and rotors, and do the coolant temp sensor.

I've heard of changing the coolant temp sensor on around the forums. I'll have to see where I can find a good OEM replacement, as I understand the Lexus OEM isn't too cheap.

DO NOT clean the AFM. You'll ruin it.

X2 RUIN IT new ones are about $700.

Never done it but I think the only possible way they could be cleaned would be to take it apart if possible, and that may ruin it as well. There is a mirror in them and photo receptor that would need cleaning, your just messing them up with any sort of cleaner, its a small hole and any contamination will not evaporate and leave a film on those parts.

Good to know, I didn't realize it had a AFM not a MAF. lol, glad i brought that up on here before ruining it. I'll stick to finding a OEM coolant temp sensor and some OEM spark plugs as well.

I'm looking into doing this tune up sometime next month. I found what I think are some good OEM quality plugs, wires, pcv, and pcv grommet which I will link down below. I can't seem to find many good sources for OEM quality cap and rotor at a reasonable price. I found this cap and rotor kit on Amazon, but don't really trust that its any good: Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Heres the parts I've gathered thus far:

I ended up using YEC caps and rotors, which are made in Japan and seem to be good quality. They were about $90cad.

I ordered them them through the Toyota dealer, you can also get them online

in my opinion, there is no need to go Denso OEM for the spark plugs. you will be fine going with NGK iridiums, easily bought at your local auto parts store for much less than OEM.

Hey all! Just got my shipment from rockauto today. Im pumped! I got Beck arnley cap and rotors, Denso Long life Iridium spark plugs, and NGK wire set. Can't wait to get started! Wont be getting into to it though until after next week as I'll be on vacation.

I'm gonna be watching this thread. Can you please take pictures and detailed steps when you do the wires? It would help me to learn about working with the electronics in cars.

Also, how do you tighten your spark plugs? Do you tighten them until you feel it "sit" and give it one more half turn? Sorry, I'm struggling with words right now. What I mean is I know that you're not supposed to overtighten (or undertighten) spark plugs so I need a reminder on how to do it. I'm gonna do the spark plugs in mine soon.

Let us know what kind of performance enhancements you see.

I can make some steps here on this thread. Check out this link also: http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/ignition/sparkplugs.html This guy has a ton of tutorials on the 1st gen LS. As for tightening the spark plugs, I usually tighten till its hard to turn, then go a little over a quarter turn. On the tutorial it says to tighten to 13 ft lbs.
