I just recently ordered a set of illuminated door sills for my 2012 IS250 and upon opening the package today noticed that the aluminum looks like it would scratch easily. What has everyone done to protect from scratches/dance/damage? I'm not worried about the actual colored plastic surround, just the metal part. Thinking about applying a protective film such as Xpel since it's considered self healing however would like to know what some people have done...

If I had to give it a guess I'd say just get a quality clear wrap for it. Self healing would be much better.

Little off topic but there are tons of other thing you should pay more attention than just this door sills

I know how you feel when about it. same as myself but after while you will be getting use to it. We have to live with it cause some careless passengers (like my kids- lol) will damaged more than just a little hairline scratch.

Clear wrap would be your only viable option as mentioned above.

I have illuminated sills and its just a result of where they are in the car.. your feet pass over them on the daily they bound to get scratched up and dirty

They look badass at night and that's all that matters

they're going to get scuffed. that's why door sills are also called scuff sills.

as others have stated, your only option is to wrap them in a high-quality clear film.

Aspect

You can polish the surface scratches every so often if you don't want to use protective wrap, but since it looks brushed I don't think it would be the best option either.

I have illuminated sills and I left the clear tape on the lighted part when I installed them like 7 yrs ago. The tape lasted about those 7 yrs and this summer I replaced the original tape w/clear packing tape. Seems to be holding up so far. If you can find tape wide enuf to cover the whole metal part w/o seaming it,its a cheap and easy fix.

Hate to burst your bubble but it looks like there is a big ol scratch on them already. Or it could be a hair.

That little scratch is on the wrap they come with from the factory but it's only stuck on with bubbles under it so it'll have to be removed before installation and probably replaced with a high quality wrap

Amazon has some clear vinyl sheets from iJDMTOY that can be easily applied to the door sills. I would trace the sill with paper and then make the cuts in the vinyl instead of cutting while applied so that you don't risk scratching the sill.
