Combining generous portions of style, power, handling and luxury amenities, the Lexus Coupe was an auto industry sensation at its debut. Characterized by the early advertising line "an iron fist in a velvet glove," the SC 400 adds performance muscle for 1996 in the form of a thoroughly redesigned higher V8 output powerplant, first introduced in the 1995 LS 400.
In addition to the SC 400's new V8, both SC 400 and SC 300 Coupe models gain numerous convenience and safety features which first debuted on the completely redesigned 1995 LS 400. Among these are a new multi-function keyless entry system incorporating remote unlocking of the driver door or all doors, as well as trunk release and panic alarm via a key-fob transmitter. Self-dimming electrochromic mirrors (standard on SC 400, optional on SC 300) for all three mirrors automatically respond to headlights approaching from behind.
Also new for '96 is the addition of a one-touch slide-open function for the powe rtilt and slide moonroof. Pre-wiring for optional Lexus mobile phone systems connects to a glass-imprinted antenna, eliminating the need for vulnerable and unsightly pigtail type antenna.
Lexus factory chrome-plated wheels are made available as an option. With multi-layer plating many times thicker than typical aftermarket chromed wheels, Lexus factory option wheels meet strict Lexus standards for corrosion and chip resistance, and assure long-term customer satisfaction.
Design
The stunning shape of the SC Coupes resulted from innovative design techniques creating a car destined to be a classic. Rather than start with a clean sheet of paper, designers based at Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, California started with balloons and plaster, developing organic shapes that were then photographed and projected at different angles. Those designs were used to make clay models and then a full size prototype without a car ever having been drawn.
Designers and production engineers worked closely to ensure that the classic flowing lines of the coupe would be transferred from concept to reality. The conventional automotive design process usually requires considerable compromise of the body shape to accommodate mechanical components and "hard points." Vigorous efforts by the Lexus engineering and manufacturing teams made it possible to package sophisticated powertrain, mechanical and interior components without changing the dramatic shape of the concept model.
Powertrains
Thanks to this lighter weight and higher output V-8, the SC 400's zero-to-sixty performance is improved to 6.8 seconds. Quarter-mile acceleration takes 15.2 seconds and top test speed is 140 mph. Horsepower and performance gains are joined by an improvement in EPA fuel economy from 18 city/22 highway to 18/23.
The SC 400 is powered by a 4.0-liter, 4-cam, 32-valve V8. this engine utilizes aluminum alloy cylinder heads and block. Extensive weight and friction reduction and redesign of intake tracts have resulted in increased horsepower yet reduced fuel consumption. Power output is 260 hp at 5300 rpm, while peak torque of 270 lbs.-ft. occurs at 4500 rpm. Careful attention was paid to tuning the exhaust note for the right combination of mechanical excitement and sophistication.
An extremely smooth and high-revving 3.0-liter six cylinder powerplant is fitted to the SC 300. Producing 225 hp at 6,000 rpm and 210 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm, this engine employs wide valve angles, four valves per cylinder and extensive weight-and friction-reducing technology to produce unusually high output for its displacement.
Using the inherently balanced in-line configuration, this engine mates with an optional 4-speed automatic, or standard close-ratio 5-speed manual gearbox. Thanks to the engine's quick and smooth high rpm throttle response, the manual transmission powertrain provides driving enthusiasts a satisfying experience, and 0-60 acceleration of 7.5 seconds. SC 300 top test speed is 146 mph.
Chassis
Both SC 300 and SC 400 employ four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension, with coil springs and gas pressurized shock absorbers. Suspension tuning has been painstakingly developed to provide stable handling precision married with refined ride characteristics to provide the best of both sports and luxury cars.
Vehicle-speed-sensitive progressive power rack and pinion steering yields a quick 3.1 turns, lock to lock, for positive steering inputs and reassuring feedback. Power-assisted ventilated disc brakes with a 3-channel anti-lock system are fitted to all four wheels.
SC 400s ride on 16x7.0 inch alloy wheels and 225/55R16 V-rated performance tires. The SC 300 is fitted with 16x6.5 alloy wheels and 225/55R16 V-rated performance tires. Speed-rated all season tires are available as a no cost option and all Lexus coupes are fitted with a full-size spare tire.
Features and Convenience
While most noted for their design and performance, the SC 400 and SC 300 stand apart from other coupe models thanks to numerous innovations. A unique "easy access" four-link door hinge is double-jointed and swings the door out and forward for improved entry and exit.
The SC 400 introduced the industry's first power walk-in feature on the front passenger seat, which electrically moves the seat forward to aid rear passenger entry, then returning it to position for the front passenger.
Naturally, the Lexus coupes share a long list of convenience features with their sedan stablemates, including power tilt and telescopic steering wheel with automatic memory tilt-away feature. A multi-adjustable power driver-seat memory function stores preferred seat position as well as outside mirror settings for two persons. Along with leather interior, these features are standard equipment on the SC 400, optional on SC 300.
Safety
The '96 SC 400 and SC 300 meet 1997 dynamic side impact test requirements and mechanical seat-belt pretensioners, new for 1996, remove slack from driver and passenger belts in the event of a frontal collision. Dual front airbags and four-wheel, three-channel anti-lock brakes are standard.
The Lexus TRAC electronic traction control system, employing a combination of engine throttle and brake intervention, is available with automatic transmission cars and is packaged with thermostatically heated front seats for cold climate areas.
Audio and Electronics
Both Lexus Coupe models are equipped with a standard seven-speaker premium audio system, featuring door-mounted tweeters and midrange speakers with tuned sub enclosures. Back-deck-mounted full-range speakers are joined by an 8-inch separately powered subwoofer which utilizes the trunk cavity as a tuned low frequency enclosure. Maximum standard system power is 170 watts.
A 280 watt Lexus/Nakamichi system and 12-disc CD changer are optional. One new color, Bordeaux Pearl, joins seven other Coupe colors, including Diamond White Pearl, Black Onyx, Renaissance Red, Sandstone Beige Metallic, Royal Jade Pearl, Midnight Indigo Pearl and Platinum Metallic.
