So I have been getting a very slight vibration at 60mph and again at 78 mph, it has been slowly getting a bit worse. Car has 194k on it now and runs perfect. Thought it was my terrible Pirelli tires P7 or something like that. They only last 31k miles... Junk. So I installed new Michelin's! Still had the slight vibration, so I went under the car and saw the transmission mount had a nice split in it. Ordered an OEM one of the internet and last night I put it on. Super super easy. Took longer to get the car up on stands and safe then it did to replace the mount.
The car is so nice now. It was super smooth before but now its at another level again. Awesome for $50 bucks and 6 min time! Could be a common thing I don't know, but worth a check for you guys!
Totally worth it. My motor mounts were completely cracked. Made a huge improvement to the "glide", and tightened up the drivetrain. And fixed a vibration the engine had out of gear if you rev'd it.
Cool! Thanks for the verification. I too did notice if you rev’d it in neutral it would vibrate around 2 k rpms. Now it’s buttery smooth. I will keep my feelers out for it to return and check the motor mounts again. Right now mine are solid.
love this old car. I still get compliments about everywhere I go!
next I’m gearing up for the valve cover gaskets.
Did the timing belt and water pump and plugs last year. Did all new pads and rotors last fall and fluid change. All up on all maint items. Even shampooed the carpets last week under quarantine!
Car still doesn’t burn a drop of oil! Runs perfect.
Anyone use dea/marmon ride control mounts? Drove my buddies 2000 and it feels like OEM. Says he got all 3 from that brand. Was like wow! Can get all 3 for price of 1
The general ethos for this car is always go OEM for anything in the suspension, with the single exception being shocks.
Lot of threads saying "aftermarket xyz failed or sucks", not many threads saying "OEM failed or sucks".
And make sure you're buying from a trusted source, there are fake "toyota" parts out there.
I replaced my motor and trans mount with OEM and I still have a mystery low pitched vibration between 50-60 mph. I'm suspecting the drive shaft center support. Hope it's just that and not the drive shaft.
Had some time to work on the 99! Got the valve cover gaskets replaced. It sure looked to be factory. Sorry i didn't take any pics. Job was really easy and only took a few hours. Did it over the course of 2 days due to free time constraints. 4kids...
anyway both were leaking as were a few of the spark plug tube seals. I even pulled out the half moons and resealed them as well. I would highly recommend doing this if you have been putting it off. My car just turned over 194k miles. She runs and drives so nice. I would get a slight burnt oil smell maybe once a month, but now she is dry and back to great. Also just got some new Michelin tires! PS do not buy the Pirelli's Bought those 36K miles ago and they were shot. I drive like a grandpa and drive mostly highway. Had them rotated every 7k miles too.
Also got the carpets shampooed and interior cleaned up and detailed. Leather is super soft and looks new still I'm always impressed on the quality of this car. Car should be good now for another 200k miles.
I bought my ls400 with a bad trans mount. Really bad vibration and I think it's actually the reason the previous owner was anxious to get rid of it. I bought the part and local dealer only charged me for a half hour of labor to put it in.
Super easy fix and probably needs to be done on every 1st gen by now.
