2018 Mazda6 (gets a more powerful engine option finally)
The updated looks are accompanied by significant mechanical upgrades. While the current model offers just one engine, a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder, the new car will have two options. The first is again a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine, but it now has cylinder deactivation, allowing it to run on just two cylinders at times. For those who prefer power to efficiency, the Mazda6 will also be available with the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder from the CX-9 crossover. In that application, it makes 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.
The full reveal of the car happens on November 29 at the L.A. Auto Show.

Read at another source that it makes more power on 93 than on regular. Goes to show you that premium fuel does still make a difference

haha. I didn't even know they would come out with a new model.
I thought they were going to drag out the 2013 model for another 2 years.
oh wait, this is just a refresh. But still, the 2013 was getting long in the tooth. On the lower trims, they have not updated the face since 2013. Hopefully, the lower trims get the new face.

tI agree. Great news for the 6. It still won't challenge the big boys for volume, but a nice upgrade that will keep it more than competitive and no doubt grab some new buyers.

Driving the CX-9 2.5L Turbo around town, there is plenty of bottom end response, torque and smoothness; I can't feel any turbo lag at all.
However, press hard on the right foot, and the engine becomes loud, harsh and it reminds you that this is a large capacity 4 cylinder engine.
My wife's IS200t?
Driving gently around town, both throttle response is laggy, while the torque is lethargic, but worse is some type of droning noise - tiring.
However, press hard on the right foot, and the engine delivers much more acceleration than the CX-9, but the 2.0T spins silkily smooth and is relatively quiet; this is as good as a four cylinder can get.
My last test drive of BMW's 2.0T, it was lethargic down low, but higher up in the rev range, the turbo would give a big kick.
It's been a while since I drove Mercedes 2.0T in C and E Class, but I suspect that Benz 2.0T has the best of both worlds, but I would have to test drive them again to confirm.

Wonder why they didn't download that CX9 drive train to the 6 sooner. It is easily the sporty sibling to the usual family fare and was just crying for a more powerful engine. Apparently at one time, they had notions about the diesel option, but it never happened. This is great news for 6 buyers.

The funny thing with the 6 is, that in Europe and the JDM market this sedan already has an AWD option to make it that much more practical as a sporty all season cruiser. So all they need now is to bring some of that engineering and some CX9 bits to this platform, and you have the perfect enthusiast's sedan with excellent material quality and fit/finish etc. This car looks nicer and also different from the rest of the herd, while having a much nicer driving experience.
