a good upholstery shop will be able to stop it from getting any larger, and fill it in with leather/vinyl filler to make it not as noticeable (it is dyed to match the surrounding material)

sounds easy...there is more to it but if you can do it on a RWD platform...

Don't do it. I know its costly to go OEM or KYB, but the Gabriel Ultraready struts are what I used to replace my old struts (170k on them). They were terrible! Car rode like it was on leaf...
