I am experiencing some intermittent issues with the top. Using my iCarsoft i905 scanner, i have identified that the package tray switch #1 sometimes doesn't switch properly. I am experiencing a B2518 and B2565 that started not long after correcting a B2502 , "Open in Roof Drive RH Motor Circuit" which required me to replace the motor. The motor replacement went well. But these new problems started soon after.
I have the Overhaul procedure provided by VVTiBob but I can only identify one adjustment in the Overhaul procedure for a "Roof Panel Link Adjusting Screw". The procedure is referenced to ensure the top doesn't lift in the rear at high speeds so it doesn't seem to be an adjustment that would affect my top and experience the issues that I am having.
There was one step I didn't do when I replaced the drive motor which was Step 46 and 47 on Page 74-28 of the service manual. It said to remove the limit switch and then in the very next step to reinstall the limit switch. No adjustment or alignment was spelled out so I didn't do it as it wasn't required to replace the motor itself.
In summary, what I want to ask is am I missing something? Or do you think that I probably just have an intermittent package tray limit switch? Although the B2565 is another indication that can't be ignored either.
When the problem occurs, different symptoms are experienced. Sometimes the top opens normally but then won't close but the failure happens in different parts of the top cycle.
My work around has been to lift the package tray by hand "if" its in the down position and "bounce" the top folded inside the trunk area by picking up a corner and letting it drop back under its own weight so that any limilt switches get bumped to cause them to work properly. This has worked a few times now. But at least once, the package tray was already fully opened. I just have to push the top "Open" button on the dash again and hope the top folds itself back down properly. Which it "usually" does to try again to get the top to close.
What do you guys think? Bad switches? Alignment? Or something else that I haven't thought of? Thanks.
Assuming you already did a hard reset (battery disconnected for a cup of coffee) on the roof ECU then retest. If the intermittent problem persists then you’re stuck going through the failure points one by one. And their connection too. Sadly intermittent problems are the most frustrating and it’s why dealers do wholesale component replacements.
I agree with VVTiBob. However, from your full description, it does sound like it could likely be a switch starting to fail. If they are reasonably cheap to replace, I'd go ahead and replace the switches and hope for the best. But definitely go through the full diagnostic process first.
The problem with intermittent problems is that they are by definition intermittent. So it could be failing until you start working on it and then start working and stay working until you go to use it again. Then rinse and repeat. The "trick" is to catch it failing and being able to identify the failure point. The problem without a 100% failure identification is that you're never completely sure that the problem is fixed or whether it has just gone back in hiding again.

Well, that should have been the first thing that I thought of being a qualified electronics technician and all. LOL. Even though I believe that I may be looking at multiple possibilities due to the various symptoms, those symptoms could also be a manifestation of the top ecu being corrupted. I will do that right away. Even if I don't believe that it is what will fix the problem, maybe it will at least clear up some of the anomalies. Thanks Bob.
Well, its pretty much confirmed now. I have a bad package tray switch #1 located on the drivers side OR I have an ECU issue. Unfortunately, now none of my work around tricks have worked and no matter what I do, I cannot get the switch to change states and with the top down and folded into the trunk, I can't get to the ECU. So my top is down, package tray is open and I can't do anything else except manually open or close it. Bummer. These are the pics I have that would mean anything. The package tray trim is retracted but that's where she stops. I guess I will see what two package tray switches cost now. Ahhhhhhhhh!
Paul This is the package tray switch positions indicated on the iCarsoft i905 when the package tray is in its full upright position. And this is what a bad switch does to your tops operation.

Well SOB. It's Package tray switch #2. Not #1 as I thought. Oh well. On to switch #2 after I get the drivers side put back together again. This is with one screw removed from the Package tray switch so I could drop it down to test the plunger. Pressing and releasing the plunger causes the scanner to change from off to on normally which means its actually switch #2 that should have been OFF instead of on as previously indicated. This is the switch. And this is the switch in its normal configuration.
Well. That was unexpected. It appears that the switch #2 package tray position wheel is supposed to be opposite from the drivers side. I'm sure that means the ECU uses switch position indication for package tray position. Duh. But the next question is, where does that leave me in the diagnoses? ECU? I have to think about this for a little while.
Paul Image shows the switch position wheel has a depression for this switch to be open or "OFF" while the drivers side switch is closed or "ON" when the package tray is in the up position.
I hate being wrong all the time. Started up the car and hit the open button just for kicks. The package tray went down to its normal position and the trunk closed. BUT... I read the package tray switch positions again just because, and now, with the package tray in its normal top up position, BOTH switches show "OFF". I expected that their indication would have switched. Its raining now and I am going to close the top and take a break for a little while because right now, I'm confused.
And with the top closed, Tah Dah! Both package tray switches ore "OFF". I did see them cycle as the top was closing. Just surprised at what I am observing. Of course this means I didn't fix squat! Gotta love intermittent problems.
Indication of package tray switches with the top completely closed.

And I need to say that regardless of whether I fixed it or not, I couldn't even attempt the effort without the GREAT members and Moderators of this forum. My humble Thanks. Again. LOL.
