Brake Rotors
Went to the dealer with a complaint that there was a vibration in the steering wheel when braking, I told them I thought the rotors were out of round. They test drove it and confirmed that they were. The car is an 02 SC430 with 29 000km (18000 miles) on it.
When I picked up the car I asked them what they did, they told me that they machined the rotors. I thought that was strange, I thought they would replace them, as they have done in the past with my previous SC400 that had same problem. I have read that "turning" the rotors is rarely done today. On many car the rotors aren't thick enough to allow for this, but I don't know if this is the case with the 430's rotors.
I wanted new rotors put on the front not machined ones.
What do you think?

DT430,
I had the same problem (19,500 kms) and Ken Shaw did the same thing also.. Their explanation was the warpage wasn't severe but if I experienced any more noise or vibration they would change my rotors at my next visit.. So far (24,000 kms) no issues but my hearing might change come next visit..
I have had no issues at this dealership and they take extra good care of me so i'm not sweating it..

There is nothing wrong with machining rotors on a lexus. All lexus rotors are 1mm thicker than minimum thickness. Plenty of room for machining. In fact 9 out of 10 times a brake pulsation is not caused by rotor warpage. But an uneven amount of brake pad material embedded into the rotor. This causes the brake pads to grab harder on one area of the rotor than the other.
Did they fix the pulsation?

That's call "Cut Rotor" That will happen to every car with disk brake. The rotors will bent cuz the heat or other factors.....and the bent will cuz the vibration. It's perfetly ok for the Lexus dealer to re-surface the rotors and not replace them......so don't worry about it. Rotors have their life span too, I don't know how long though. My 10 YEARS OLD LS400(there is an SC430 owner who look down on me cuz my car is SO OLD) with 180000 miles is still running on the original rotors. Just don't get the "Cross-Drilled" rotor cuz you can't re-surface those. BTW........Don't hose your brakes while they are still hot, that'll cuz the the bent of the rotors and also squeaky brakes. Hopefully these info will help you..........cuz according to an SC430 owner here in ClubLexus, if I don't own an SC430, I can't post my opinions
