Default Sell SC430 or keep it forever?

My wife has a 2002 SC430 lexus with 148K miles. We've been trying to sell it but having issues due to several cosmetic problems with it. Mechanically, it is sound! The engine is superbly quiet, the transmission has zero issues, and the car just glides over potholes. Yes, it does have 17 years of wear and tear that's expected and they don't make this car no more. Other than that, the car does have multiple oil leaks here and there but it doesn't burn oil and lose oil much.

Today I drove it with the top-down and it is swanky in the socal summer sun. Maybe I should just keep it?

We've been trying to get $6K for it but there are no takers. Seems like folks are willing to go as high as $5K. Is the 4.3L V8 just bullet proof?

A few points:
  • tighten your valve cover bolts. They tend to loosen over time (or else the gasket shrinks making the bolts loose) and it starts to leak there.
  • It will sell faster shortly as spring kicks more into gear.
  • Why not fix up the little things that bother you and keep it? That will likely be way cheaper than buying a new car.

I have 02 for16 years, drive less than 2.5K miles annually. (62.5k odometer). I have been thinking of selling and living on Uber.....(I am now trying to be minimalist)
THis is what my friend suggested.
If you have a garage space to park and $5/10 k cash is not significant to pay off your bills, keep it.

We bought a new '18 RX350 for my wife. I drive an old Acura TSX now (200k miles). I sold my '09 BMW 335i last year which was a fantastic fun car to drive but maintenance killed me after that. The SC430 is getting old with some things breaking/leaking here and there but overall the engine is definitely bullet proof. Seems to just run forever. Having said that, we don't need 3 cars. The TSX gets better mileage and although at 200K miles, it is cheaper to maintain with 4 less cylinders and can seat 5 people. The SC however is a blast to drive as well with the top down and that honkin' V8. But we don't like paying for car insurance, registration, and fees for 3 cars at the moment. We could certainly use the money.

Maybe we'll just keep waiting until spring rolls around. The SC is currently parked out on the street but we're in a pretty darn safe neighborhood here in California.

I think I will have to keep mine forever. My 8 year old does not want me to sell it ! He likes top down driving. Maybe in 10 years I can give it to him and I can get something else.

I am the same way, no plans of selling the SC. It is just pleasing to take the SC for a ride and the wife loves it. Especially when the top is down, will keep it for now. Then again, depends on how much money is laid on the table, if somebody wants your SC and a nice chunk of change is offered, it will be tempting. However, it is getting harder and harder to land on a good SC out there.

.....if it was me, I would probably hang on to it....lol....but I did read your post #4, if you have had offers as high as $5k, then go ahead and sell it. You'll automatically save the money that you're spending on it & recoup the $1k difference very fast.......just a thought

I’ll keep this car until I leave this world. My wife can do anything with it after. Or better yet, I’ll instruct in my will to donate it to the charity.

Just got our '02 SC430 last year and like you it's our third car (kicked my GS400 out of the garage). That being said if you don't need it you'll definitely be able to sell it come spring. It was right around this time last year that we purchased ours. Our SC is only our weekend vehicle so we have no plans on selling it. We love the look and the fact they don't make them anymore you don't see many of them on the road.
