Default License Plate Lights

My license plate lights on my 2006 sc430 are not working. I looked at the light housing and there is a broken piece floating around. Lexus dealer says I must buy the entire assembly. With installation $330. I am wondering has anyone modified the sealed unit on 2006-10 with the units for pre 2006 that used bulbs. Or is it possible to cut off the 06-10 light housing and splice a pre 2005 housing. Thanks for any help. Surely there is a way to replace license plate lights for less than $330. Maybe even installing a universal license plate light. Thanks The top picture is pre 2006 the bottom picture is some 2006 and all of 07-10

Have you looked on eBay for a replacement?

Also, a picture might help us understand your problem better.

Default License Plate Lights

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have looked at ebay but all they have are the housings that use bulbs, not the sealed housings. Can I use these by splicing the wires in the current wiring and use bulbs?

That's what these are on eBay , and for 1/3 of what your dealer wants. https://www.ebay.com/itm/FACTORY-OEM....c100005.m1851

Thanks for the suggestion. I was hoping to get just the housing and not the entire harness so I could splice to existing harness. Lexus dealer wants $180 for the harness and $140 to install. It looks difficult to replace harness as opposed to just cutting wires and splice. I may have to go with your suggestion cut the wires and splice rather installing the whole thing9

Just purchase the correct part for $134. Remove the old light assembly and don’t cut any wires...it easy and plug and play. You may need to access the connector from inside the trunk. Those interior pieces are easy to remove.

Agree these are not hard to replace. I installed my Lexus puddle lights and I had to tap into it.

Check local junk yards for the specific part. A used junk yard license plate light should be pretty reasonable cost.

I have checked junk yards. They do not have the specific part I want. I think I have confused people. The 2006 sc430 has an integrated led in a sealed housing. What I want to do is either modify the existing sealed housing or a pre2006 housing to accept a new led light with positive and negative wires that can be attached to red and black wires that I will cut from the original housing. I know I am probably being a bit difficult but I cannot get myself to pay even $150 with shipping for a simple license plate light.

LoL, now I understand...if you are okay with $18, just pick them up used on eBay and plug them into the existing harness. If the plugs are different then splice them. Make sure you do the splice in the trunk because you should avoid the splice being exposed to the elements.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Here is what I hope to do. I found two pre 2006 housing (these are the ones not sealed and require a bulb) that will fit the existing holes on my 2006. I also purchased two led lights used primarily for motorcycles. I am going to insert one light into each of the housings, cut the wires from the existing harness and splice the two new led lights to the existing wires. Hopefully if this works it will save me about $300 and the license plate lights will appear stock. I will let you know if this works, after I get the parts and install. Thanks again for your help.

Sounds like a pretty smart plan especially the saving $300 buck part. Please share results on the project once you get it completed.

I also have this issue and my plan is to modify the existing housings to hold LED bulbs. I will let you know what I find, but the hundreds of dollars to replace option is just not happening at my house.
