Arrow OUCH!!! 2nd Gen SC430 IN MISHAP

While i was at a complete stop at 4way-stop intersection, my (almost beloved) wonderful 2006 SC was rear-ended by a distracted driver. Although the insurance carrier has not made a determination, they may designate the car as totaled. Does anyone have suggestions foe A0 if it is totaled, or B) if it can be repaired? pictures will be listed soon!!

Sorry to hear that man, but honestly I will all depend on your adjuster. My wife's LS460 was t-bone at an intersection, the car's fair market value was 24k and the total estimated damaged equal to 18k, they still fixed it and didn't claim it as a total loss. A lot of people will say it depends on your SC's fair market value VS the cost of damage but thats not always the case. If its just a fender bender I wouldn't think they would total it.

If it is a bad rear end wreck, I'd go with the total and start looking for a replacement. So much of the roof mechanism will likely be involved that I'd be concerned about whether it will come out okay.

I agree. A lot of SC's get totaled because the "Book on Repairs" says the cost to repair the roof is so much. Lexus's suggestion is almost always REPLACE THE HINGE for $3500 when there is a roof problem. On the plus side, you can buy a used hinge on ebay for $200 and replace it yourself.

If you still really like the SC, maybe this a good time to transition to a newer one, like a 2010

So, Part 2 of OUCH saga.... after my 2006 SC430 was rear-ended while I was at a complete stop at a 4-way intersection, I called the insurance to start the claim process, and the local lexus dealer to get their recommendation for a body shop...that day, I drove to the shop and left the car for estimate, appraisal, and decision to repair or total. Insurance wants to remove the damaged/contorted/bruised/folded, and otherwise mutilated parts in order to assess whether more severe structural damages exist. I will try to post pictures ....in looking at th images, it doesn't appear to be as bad as i felt

Rear ended damage. Note the taillights seem undamaged.

Sorry to hear about the terrible accident! Was the top up or down when happened? Any estimate on the damage?

So, the current status. The Insurance Adjuster authorized shop to remove obvious damaged parts in order to ascertain whether or not the impact of collision could have resulted in more severe structural damage. When I first saw the impacted area, I assumed there had to be frame damage. Then, after calming down and looking more closely at these photos, I began thinking that the damage was only superficial , and confined to the "skin'. However, after some investigation by the Lexus certified Body Shop manager, it appears that the top is now slightly out of alignment and the hinge ($3500) has to be replaced. My guess is that the cost of parts and labor will exceed..or match... the value of the car, thus leading to the "totaling" of the car.

i think now that i would rather have the car totaled and I will search for another (eg 2010), rather than have a great car like this carry a CARFAX report showing the car was damaged severely enough to consider salvage. As good as the body shop is, the process of removal/ replacing/retrofitting/ with OEM parts, the car may always bear the scars. Geesh, what a crying shame! Oh well, in reality its just metal, no body was injured, and i have a free lesson of the importance of not texting while driving But..Scratch one fine SC430

Thanks Harold and Dar, I have started searching for a replacement. I thought i would look at more unique 430's , such as NM or Pebble beach, but frankly I don't play golf and, i really don't have a desire for them. Then, i wondered about those SC with kind of unique paints, like Pine or Amethyst. Now I am concentrating on a 2010!! anyone know of one that is coming up ?

anyone have suggestions?

Glad that you have your answer now. I'm sure that is a bit of a relief. Good luck in your hunt for version 2!

Honestly is doesn't look that bad. If there isn't frame damage most likely they will most likely fix it and not total it.
